The Toronto Blue Jays are just half a game out of the final wild card spot in the American League after beating the Oakland Athletics in Game 1 of their series.

The Jays gained a game on the Texas Rangers – who lost to the Houston Astros – in the AL wild card race.

Bassitt has a 3.43 ERA since the start of July (11 starts), leading the Jays to a 7-4 record in those games. 

Toronto is so close to a playoff spot, and this game should mean a ton for the team considering Houston and Texas (the two teams ahead of them) play tonight. 

I think Bassitt has the advantage here over Waldichuk, who has worked out of the bullpen and in the rotation this season – leading to him having a lot of short starts. 

That’s a major issue since Oakland has the worst bullpen ERA in Major League Baseball this season at 5.30.

The Jays are also sixth in the league in OPS against left-handed pitching, so I think they’ll be able to jump on the young Oakland starter.
