Toronto Blue Jays rookie Will Wagner has had an impressive start to his MLB career since joining the club back on August 12. On Saturday, the 26-year-old infielder has added to that with a record-setting performance against the Minnesota Twins.
In the game, Wagner pounded out 5 hits, including 3 singles, a double and a home run, along with 3 runs scored and 3 RBI over six at-bats. The five hits that he registered made him the first rookie in franchise history to accomplish it in a single game. But his performance wasn’t the only thing affecting records this night as the Jays’ 15-0 win over the Twins also matched a club record for the largest shutout win by the team (previously achieved against the Detroit Tigers on July 6, 1996).
Wagner might have been the lowest-ranked prospect coming over in the package from the trade that sent starter Yusei Kikuchi to the Houston Astros. However, he is certainly playing now like he was the centrepiece of the deal. In 16 games to date, Wagner has compiled a stellar .357 average, .950 OPS, along with 8 runs scored, 6 doubles, 2 home runs and 8 RBI.
But it hasn’t been just his bat doing the talking. He has also flashed a solid glove in the field, converting 8 double plays and posting a solid .982 fielding percentage with just one error in 55 total chances over 122 innings.
In addition, Wagner has shown great resilience and maturity for a young player like him, as he didn’t let his recent mini-slump from his previous few games affect his confidence at the plate.
Overall, from the way that Wagner has been playing, it doesn’t appear like he will be relinquishing his spot in the Jays’ lineup any time soon. On top of that, he is currently making a strong case in securing a spot on their big league roster for 2025. Nevertheless, the future appears bright for both Wagner and the Blue Jays going forward.
