In a recent minor league game between the Toronto Blue Jays Single-A affiliate Dunedin and the Philadelphia Phillies Single-A affiliate Clearwater on Saturday July 6, the match was called off during the fifth inning as a result of a serious injury to Blue Jays outfielder prospect Yeuni Munoz.

At the time, Munoz was running on a hit-and-run play with Jays’ third baseman Drew Jemison at the plate. With Jemison striking out on the play, Munoz ended up getting thrown out at second for the double play. However, his slide into second base resulted in his significant injury, as he needed to be carted off the field on a stretcher. With everyone on both teams emotionally shaken by the incident, the officials decided to end the game early, with the Dunedin Blue Jays earning a 2-1 win in five innings. The good news was the fact that Munoz was in stable condition upon arriving and evaluation at the hospital.

On Tuesday, Munoz got the green light and was officially discharged from the hospital, giving a huge sigh of relief for those that had been actively following the situation. However, he has since been put under MLB concussion protocol and will likely need some more time off now before he can ultimately return to action.

A native of the Dominican Republic, Munoz joined the Jays’ organization back in 2021 as an international free agent. He had played with the Rookie-level FCL Blue Jays last season where he registered a .229 average, .636 OPS, along with 12 runs scored, 8 doubles, a home run and 14 RBI in 28 games played. This year, Munoz had moved up one minor league level to Single-A and had appeared in 24 games to date for Dunedin, posting a .162 batting average, .554 OPS, with 9 runs scored, 3 doubles, a home run and 5 RBI.

Here, we send our well wishes to a speedy recovery for Munoz and hope that he will be healthy and back in action in the not-so-distant future.
