Blue Jays announce bullpen shakeup prior to weekend series vs. Braves
We've been pointing this out for weeks now, but the Toronto Blue Jays have arguably the worst bullpen in all of Major League Baseball this year. The relief corps is currently 28th in the league in ERA, 30th in FIP, 27th in K/9 and 30th in HR/9. It ... has not been pretty.
All throughout the season, the Blue Jays have been taking on more reclamation projects than you can count. Ryan Burr, Tommy Nance, Dillon Tate, Jose Cuas, Yerry Rodriguez, Easton Lucas, Emmanuel Ramirez, Paolo Espino, Luis Frias and James Kaprielian are some of the names with big league experience either claimed on waivers, acquired for cash or signed to minor league contracts.
On Friday just before the start of a weekend series against the Braves, the Blue Jays took to social media (X link) to announce that Frias was being recalled from Triple-A to join the big league 'pen. Heading back down to the Buffalo Bisons is left-hander Brandon Eisert.
Blue Jays recall Luis Frias, option Brandon Eisert
Frias, 26, has appearaned in at least three big leagues games in each of the past four seasons. All 54 of his outings came as a member of the Diamondbacks, where he posted a 6.55 ERA and 66 ERA+ through 57.2 innings of work. In that time, he walked 50 batters while walking a jaw-dropping 43 of them, too.
The right-hander typically does better in Triple-A when the competition is dialed down a bit and limited mostly to players who are just barely not good enough to play in The Show. This is proven by the fact that he made eight appearances for the Bisons before his promotion, striking out 11 and walking four in 8.1 scoreless innings.
Eisert, an 18th-round pick of the Blue Jays back in the 2019 MLB Draft, made his big league debut earlier this season and has been shuttled back and forth between Toronto and Buffalo multiple times now. He's been on the big league roster for what feels like a ton of time, but he still has only two appearances to his name as of right now. The 26-year-old walked four batters without striking any out in 4.2 innings of work.
