Toronto fans should be worried if what Ken Rosenthal suggested has any substance

Throughout this offseason, Toronto Blue Jays fans have been carefully monitoring the progress on the potential reunion with Bo Bichette in free agency. As a beloved fan favourite in Toronto and what he has accomplished with the franchise during the past seven seasons, who wouldn’t want an elite hitter back to continue wreaking havoc on the opposition on a daily basis. Even with the recent signing of Japanese star Kazuma Okamoto, it shouldn’t hinder the Blue Jays from still being in the mix for Bichette.

However, for one MLB insider, he doesn’t really see it that way as Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic pours a huge bucket of cold water on the Blue Jays chances of bringing back their star shortstop.

On a recent episode of Foul Territory, Rosenthal suggested that it is increasingly unlikely that the Blue Jays will re-sign Bichette. Rosenthal sees Kazuma Okamoto playing third for Toronto with Ernie Clement at second base and Andrés Giménez at short. If Bichette returns, Clement could be squeezed out of playing time as a result, which Rosenthal doesn’t see will happen. On the bright side, the MLB insider further elaborated that the big move he believes makes the most sense for the Blue Jays is signing Kyle Tucker.

But for Blue Jays fans, pretty sure they wouldn’t mind Clement moving into a super backup utilityman role if it means Bichette will stay in Toronto. After all, the potential impact that Bichette can provide with the bat won’t be anything Clement can come close to doing at any point in his career. With the ability to hit close to .300 with 20+ home runs and 100+ RBIs a season while coming up big in the clutch, you sure don’t find those guys every day, especially a homegrown one that Toronto has spent loads of resources in developing.

But if the sacrifice of Bichette means that the Blue Jays will get Tucker, that would be one big consolation prize for not bringing back the fan favourite. However, as Rosenthal pointed out, Toronto has to make sure they can make things work out financially before anything like that can happen.

Either way, with Rosenthal hinting Toronto shouldn’t be officially done just yet this offseason, Blue Jays fans can anticipate a big move or two still up the sleeve of GM Ross Atkins before the 2026 season rolls around. Hopefully, it will include a Bichette and/or Tucker somewhere along the way.
