The Toronto Blue Jays have had a huge bounce back 2025 season after a rather disappointing 2024 campaign. In helping them on their road to redemption, the Blue Jays have seen the revival of their once-prolific offense this year, along with some solid pitching from their starting rotation.
However, in a recent article by MLB insider Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic that looked at the biggest flaws on each of the 15 supposedly playoff contenders, he had pointed out that the Jays still have one major flaw in the overall makeup of the team. That biggest flaw as of this moment is the Toronto bullpen, as Rosenthal described their relief corps as “scary”.
MLB insider believes this is the Blue Jays biggest flaw
That makes total sense as Blue Jays relievers have struggled quite a bit, especially during the second half of the season. As Rosenthal pointed out, since the trade deadline, the Jays bullpen has one of the highest walk rates in the league, along with being among the bottom-five in terms of bullpen ERA. On top of that, they have also blown 23 saves on the season.
More importantly, the Jays relief corps has given up way too many home runs for a legitimate contender. In particular, their star closer Jeff Hoffman alone has allowed 15 home runs on the year to lead the entire league. Had Toronto not designate for assignment Chad Green earlier last month, they would have had the top two relievers in home runs given up, as Green allowed 14 home runs to the opposition before he was ultimately released.
Giving up a high number of walks along with serving up the long ball is a disastrous combination waiting to happen. Not only does it allow the opposing team to get back into the game quickly, it could lead to many winnable games being lost in the end.
The perfect example came just on Wednesday night in the game between the Jays and the Houston Astros. Toronto came through in the clutch to tie the game with two hard-earned runs during the bottom of the eighth inning, only to lose the game on a home run given up by Hoffman in the top of the ninth.
Unless the Blue Jays can rectify their bullpen issues quickly and soon enough, it could eventually catch-up to them in the coming weeks. Otherwise, it could even jeopardize their chances at winning the American League East division title, or even worse, maybe even a postseason spot when all is said and done.
