Max Scherzer working towards one last stab at a Blue Jays comeback this season

The legend deserves that one more chance with Toronto when he comes off the injured list.

When Max Scherzer re-signed with the Toronto Blue Jays this past offseason, he wanted to complete some unfinished business with this group. At the same time, it gave him the opportunity to finish off his career in style while having the chance to help the Blue Jays to a World Series title for the first time in over three decades.

However, things haven’t gone as planned for both Scherzer and Toronto, but more so for the aging 41-year-old veteran. Similar to last season, the former three-time Cy Young winner has unfortunately been spending more time on the sidelines than on the field with multiple ailments. Currently working back from another injury, this time back spasms, it appears more and more likely that this could be Scherzer’s one last stab at a comeback with the Blue Jays this season.

Could time be running out for Scherzer?

That is because even when the 41-year-old right-hander was healthy this season, he was highly ineffective. In six starts, Scherzer sported a dismal 1-4 record with a 10.23 ERA, 1.73 WHIP, giving up 25 earned runs with 11 walks and 14 strikeouts in just 22 total innings. In fact, he hasn’t made it out of the fourth inning in all but two starts this year.

On the bright side, the latest injection treatment for Scherzer’s current injury appeared to be helpful as Blue Jays manager John Schneider indicated that “it did what it should” to free up his back left side and that Scherzer “is encouraged with how he feels physically”, as per Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet.

Nevertheless, Scherzer has begun rehab games with his first one that took place on Friday with the Jays’ High-A affiliate Vancouver. Scherzer lasted three innings, throwing 49 total pitches with 33 going for strikes, giving up three runs on two hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Not an electric performance, but at least solid with some rust. According to Schneider, Scherzer will likely need a couple of more rehab starts before rejoining Toronto, as per Sportsnet.

With the trade deadline approaching in less than a month’s time, if Scherzer doesn’t show any improvement after coming off the IL and rejoining the Blue Jays, Toronto could pretty well turn to the trade route to finalize their fifth starter’s spot.

As a result, it looks like it will be boom or bust for Scherzer going forward with his future and possibly career on the line. Let’s just hope Scherzer will get the proper send off no matter how things end up working out.
