The MLB Draft is tonight (Sunday at 6pm) and there are a lot of last minute mock drafts coming to life. There are so many possibilities with what the Blue Jays could do tonight to rejuvenate their farm system. One area feels to be the more likely than others, according to one of the most credible writers on prospects in baseball.
Keith Law wrote in a recent Mock Draft in The Athletic that, "I believe the Jays are taking a shortstop here if one of the good ones is available— Carlson, Eli Willits, Wehiwa Aloy—with a college arm as the backup option."
Keith Law lays out what the Blue Jays' MLB Draft plan could look like.
Shortstop is obviously the premier position to take in the draft as that typically is the most athletic position, especially when talking about high school aged players at that spot. That means that they can often move positions with versatility and that is common across baseball. For Toronto in particular, this has one big meaning.
Bo Bichette is set to become a free agent after the season, which could lead to them looking for his replacement down the road. Arjun Nimmala is looking like he could be that guy, but prospects are still a coin flip until they can show their positive production at the big league level. That is likely why they are eyeing a high upside shortstop with their first rounder.
Now Nimmala isn't in Double-A yet, nor would a draft pick in this class get up there this season. None would be the immediate Bichette replacement, so they really seem to just want the best player available, which would be one of these shortstops.
Billy Carlson and Eli Willits are both top high school shortstops ranked within the top seven of MLB Pipeline's top draft prospects. Wehiwa Aloy is the 17th on that list. Selecting him would be an extreme underslot pick that would not benefit this team due to missing out on a second rounder. Regardless, Aloy is still a great prospect that could boost this farm system. Carlson and Willits would just be tough to fall to Toronto.
Law also mentioned a collegiate pitcher being their second choice and that could be another great avenue. Toronto is sneakily making a pitching pipeline and adding another one would deepen that. Liam Doyle, Jamie Arnold, and Kyson Witherspoon are all phenomenal options that could help that.
This draft can be very exciting for this organization despite losing a second rounder. Hopefully Ross Atkins can really find some future stars in this draft and deepen the farm system ahead of the MLB Trade Deadline to help stablize it after trades happen.
