Is this Blue Jays prospect slugging his way onto the roster?

Orelvis Martinez has impressed so far this spring.

Spring training is always a fun time of the year. Not only does it mean the MLB regular season is near, but it also means that we get to see young players from across the league get a chance to earn an MLB roster spot. Grapefruit League numbers often mean nothing, but that doesn't mean that a player can't earn his way onto a roster with a strong performance.

For the Blue Jays, that player is Orelvis Martinez, who is competing for one of the backup spots in the infield. While Martinez came up as a third baseman, he's shifted primarily to second base this spring. He finished last year ranked as the No. 2 prospect in the Blue Jays system per MLB Pipeline, but is in need of a bit of a reset after he missed the second half of last year due a PED suspension.

And if he can continue his strong start to the spring, he should be able to put all that behind him.

Orelvis Martinez has opened some eyes this spring

After Friday's game, Martinez is 3-for-10 this spring with a double, home run and two walks. It's still early in spring (and pitchers are nowhere near where they will be during the regular season), but Martinez spent the first week of spring showcasing his 60-grade power.

Last season in Triple-A, Martinez belted 17 home runs and 19 doubles to go along with a slugging percentage of .523 and an on-base percentage of .346. He had a wRC+ of 120 along with a decent strikeout rate (23.8%).

He put together a solid season last year and is knocking on the MLB door after playing in one game with the Blue Jays last year before being suspended. If he keeps this strong performance up for the rest of the spring, he could very well be on the Opening Day roster.

He's the rare player on the Blue Jays roster who can help the team both now and in the future, so Toronto's front office should do everything in it's power to get him back to the big league level.

Any MLB production from Martinez would mean even more to the organization given the questionable futures of Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette. They could both be gone after the season, so the Blue Jays are likely starting to look for players they can build around for their next contention window.

If the first week of spring is any indication, Martinez could be one of those players.
