When MLB Pipeline came out with the latest prospect rankings for the Toronto Blue Jays, those that were found near the top came as no surprise as Trey Yesavage, JoJo Parker and Arjun Nimmala rounded out the top three for the Blue Jays.
However, a surprising name appeared in the No. 5 slot in the form of oft-injured pitching prospect Ricky Tiedemann. Ranked No. 4 by MLB Pipeline last season, Tiedemann somehow fell down only one spot in 2026 despite missing the 2025 season in its entirety due to Tommy John surgery. That only means one thing in that the industry experts still believe in the Blue Jays prospect’s tool set and abilities despite the injury woes he had encountered during the past couple of seasons.
Industry experts still believe in this Blue Jays prospect’s tools despite the injuries
As a former third-round selection by Toronto in the 2021 MLB Draft, Tiedemann was previously the top pitching prospect in the entire organization between 2022-2024, and was even the No. 1 overall team prospect in 2023 and 2024.
That made total sense following his impressive professional debut in 2022 when he posted a 5-4 record with a 2.17 ERA, 0.86 WHIP, giving up 19 earned runs with 117 strikeouts in 78.2 innings over 18 minor league starts. In doing so, Tiedemann ascended three minor league levels to finish in Double-A New Hampshire in his first season with the Blue Jays organization. More importantly, he was showing that his elite fastball and changeup could dominate hitters at will.
The young left-hander would follow it up with a more roller-coaster season in 2023 that included some inconsistencies mixed in with some injuries. In the end, Tiedemann would still produce a solid 3.68 ERA, 1.23 WHIP, along with a tantalizing 82 strikeouts in 44 innings pitched over 15 starts and would complete his minor league season in Triple-A Buffalo.
However, 2024 would be a forgettable year for the 23-year-old prospect as his season would end early after eight struggling starts. Tiedemann would undergo Tommy John surgery that would put him out of action through 2025. For someone who hasn’t shown flashes of brilliance since his 2023 campaign, the fact that he is still ranked among the top 5 prospects within the Blue Jays organization speaks volumes of his potential.
Hoping to put all of his injury woes behind him, Tiedemann isn’t off to a good start in 2026 after recently experiencing left elbow soreness during a side session and has been shut down since last week. Hopefully, the once-promising top pitching prospect can ultimately overcome his ailments and avoid becoming the next Nate Pearson for the Blue Jays. That way, Tiedemann can live up to the billing that many experts pegged him to be.
