The Seattle Mariners have taken the buzz and excitement out of Toronto and all throughout Canada. After winning Game 2 against the Toronto Blue Jays 10-3 yesterday (Monday) at Rogers Centre, the Mariners have taken a commanding 2-0 series in the 2025 ALCS with the series now heading back to Seattle.

The Blue Jays will be battling history as they attempt to comeback from being down 0-2 to win the ALCS. If the Blue Jays do want to draw on some recent inspiration, the Arizona Diamondbacks recently completed an 0-2 series comeback in 2023 against the Philadelphia Phillies. But Toronto has never accomplished the feat themselves.

Blue Jays have 0-2 ALCS history against them

Prior to 2025's appearance, the Blue Jays have played in the ALCS seven times. In three of the seven appearances, the Blue Jays trailed 0-2 after the first two games, and all three times the Blue Jays ended up losing the series.

The first time was back in 1989 when the Blue Jays fell in five games to the Oakland Athletics. After losing the first two games in Oakland, the Blue Jays bounced back to win Game 3, but lost the next two games in Toronto and bowed out to the eventual World Series champion Athletics.

In 2015, Toronto was riding a streak of being the hottest team in the league after the deadline and the only team with a better record than them in the American League was the Kansas City Royals. Behind Josh Donaldson's MVP season, the Blue Jays met the Royals and opened the series in Kansas City. After losing the first game, Game 2 marked a major turning point of the series for a play that still haunts fans to this day.

Blue Jays second baseman Ryan Goins and outfielder Jose Bautista miscommunicating on a popup, which led to a five-run inning in front of a rowdy Kauffman Stadium crowd. The Blue Jays ended up losing the 2015 ALCS to the Kansas City Royals in six games.

The following year in 2016 was the third and last time the Blue Jays fell 0-2 after two games to start the ALCS. This time, it was against Cleveland and the Guardians jumped out to a 3-0 series lead, taking the first two at home and Game 3 in Toronto. The Blue Jays won Game 4 to avoid being swept, but lost Game 5 and had to watch Cleveland celebrate at Rogers Centre.

The Blue Jay bats have gone cold after dominating the New York Yankees in the ALDS. The Mariners' lineup also hasn't been scared against the Blue Jays pitching staff. The Blue Jays had the long ball beat the Yankees, but the Mariners are using the long ball in the ALCS with four home runs through the first two games.

Only three teams have ever completed an 0-2 series comeback in LCS history after losing the first two games of the series at home. The Blue Jays are hoping they can be the fourth team to accomplish that comeback.
