In 2024 when the Toronto Blue Jays dealt utilityman Isiah Kiner-Falefa to the Pittsburgh Pirates at the trade deadline, they received a promising prospect, Charles McAdoo. Ranked the No. 12 prospect of the Pirates by Baseball America at the time, the Blue Jays saw some power potential in the intriguing infielder. That same McAdoo is now turning heads so far this Spring Training for the Blue Jays, as he makes his case for his potential MLB debut in 2026.
In seven games of action so far with Toronto this spring, the 23-year-old prospect has posted a .455 batting average, 1.174 OPS, along with five hits, one run scored, two doubles, three RBIs and a stolen base in just 11 total at-bats. Despite being used more as a sub, as McAdoo has only one start under his belt, he has sure made the most of his opportunity with his limited playing time.
Former Pirates prospect making his case with Blue Jays for a big-league debut in 2026
According to MLB Pipeline, with Orelvis Martinez having left the organization last season, McAdoo represents the best Blue Jays’ power-hitting prospect within the organization at this moment. Last year with the Double-A New Hampshire he might have struggled by registering a .247 average and .732 OPS, but he still managed to put his elite combination of power and speed on full display with 24 doubles, 16 home runs and 34 stolen bases in 121 total games played.Â
More significantly, although an infielder by trade, McAdoo has also previously seen reps in right field prior to 2025. As a result, he could potentially be a valuable, power-hitting utilityman when he eventually makes the major leagues. However, he will still need some work if he intends to man the hot corner as he has committed 19 total errors with New Hampshire during his past two seasons with the minor league club, leading to a woeful .925 fielding percentage overall.Â
Currently ranked as the No. 15 prospect within the Blue Jays’ organization, McAdoo will likely begin the year with the Fisher Cats in 2026, but will be a prime candidate to be promoted to Triple-A Buffalo in due time. Once there, he will have the opportunity to showcase himself to be a valuable depth piece for the Blue Jays big league roster, given his ability to hit with power and play multiple positions in the infield and outfield. As a result, it wouldn’t be surprising if we see McAdoo actually make his MLB debut for Toronto this year, particularly later in the season if there are injuries, or sub-par performances.
As for the Pirates and their fans, they can only ponder how they completely lost this deal as Kiner-Falefa ended up returning to the Blue Jays towards the end of 2025. Therefore, it essentially made McAdoo a free gift for Toronto, other than of course the cash considerations that they had sent to Pittsburgh. That very gift could potentially blow up in the Pirates’ face, while making Blue Jays GM Ross Atkins look like a genius in stealing an elite prospect for almost nothing.
