John Gibbons had two stints as manager of the Toronto Blue Jays. Gibbons was the Blue Jays manager in 2004 and stayed in that role for four years until 2008. He returned ahead of the 2013 season and helped lead the Blue Jays to two very successful seasons in 2015 and 2016 when the Blue Jays made the ALCS in both years.

Gibbons stayed with the Blue Jays until 2018 when he was let go as Blue Jays manager at the end of the season and since then, Gibbons hasn't managed in the MLB but he has served in various coaching roles around the league.

Ahead of the 2024 season, Gibbons was hired by the New York Mets to be the team's bench coach but that is a role that lasted only a single season.

Gibbons decides to leave New York

Gibbons decided to leave his role as bench coach of the Mets after what turned into a brutal year in the 'Big Apple' for everyone, including Gibbons. At one point in June, the Mets had a 45-24 record and were leading the division. The Mets made the big splash of the offseason when they signed Juan Soto, and it seemed like the stars were aligning for a team who hasn't won the World Series since 1986. But it wasn't meant to be as the Mets suffered a massive collapse.

The Mets finished with 83 wins and missed the 2025 postseason completely. The Mets collapse in 2025 is arguably one of the the worst in MLB history.

Mets manager Carlos Mendoza was under fire during the cold stretch during the summer. Had Mendoza been fired, Gibbons may have been a candidate to replace him with his managerial experience. Now, Gibbons is looking for another position at 63 years old after deciding to leave the Mets.
