With Seranthony Dominguez now off the market (and Bo Bichette long gone), Isiah Kiner-Falefa is arguably the best Toronto Blue Jays' player from the 2025 roster who remains lingering in free agency. Kiner-Falefa is among the most versatile utility players in the league, and now that players like Bichette, Jorge Polanco, Ha-Seong Kim, and Alex Bregman have all signed, he's one the best infielders still available.
In fact, he may be the best capable shortstop left on the market. And, according to FanSided's Robert Murray, Kiner-Falefa is being pursued by multiple teams, taking virtual meetings with interested parties.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa likely to leave Blue Jays in free agency
Murray didn't name any specific suitors for the 30-year-old, though it's unlikely that the Blue Jays are one of them, seeing as their infield picture is extremely crowded after signing Kazuma Okamoto in free agency.
With Andrés Giménez sliding over to short in the wake of Bichette's departure and postseason hero Ernie Clement likely to start at second base, Toronto simply doesn't have room on the active roster for Kiner-Falefa when accounting for utility men Addison Barger and Davis Schneider.
It won't register nearly as painful as the loss of Bichette, but losing Kiner-Falefa will sting, as he was a valuable player in the Blue Jays' World Series run last year. After arriving as a waiver pickup from the Pittsburgh Pirates — the same team who acquired him the Jays at the 2024 trade deadline — he posted a 72 wRC+ in Toronto while playing multiple games at second base, third base, and shortstop.
Unfortunately, his most memorable moment with the team came in Game 7 of the World Series when he fell a single step short of crossing home plate in the bottom of the ninth. That overshadowed his October struggles at the plate, as Kiner-Falefa hit just .162/.184/.216 throughout the playoffs.
Some team will benefit from his speed, defensive versatility, and journeyman experience; in the 2022 playoffs with the New York Yankees Kiner-Falefa produced a 102 wRC+. Though he'll turn 31 just before Opening Day, he can still secure a multi-year deal at a similar rate to the $7.5 million salary he played on last season.
A return to Toronto may be unlikely, but he found his way back despite being traded in 2024. It's possible we haven't seen the last of Kiner-Falefa with the Jays.
