Former Blue Jays draft pick needed just one AB to prove hot spring wasn't a fluke

After being drafted by the Blue Jays in the 20th round of the 2018 MLB Draft, Vinny Capra played all of eight MLB games with Toronto before he was traded to the Pittsburgh Pirates in exchange for Tyler Heineman.

It took all of three innings for Vinny Capra to make his presence felt for the Milwaukee Brewers in 2025.

On Thursday, Capra, who was picked off waivers by Milwaukee after the 2023 season, slugged a home run off New York's Carlos Rodón in the third inning of their Opening Day matchup.

After playing in three MLB games with the Brewers last year, Capra earned a spot on Milwaukee's Opening Day roster by slashing .292/.358/.729 in the spring with six home runs in 19 games.

His back was against the wall this spring due to his lack of options, but he was able to make the team thanks to his hot bat and defensive versatility.

It took him all of one at-bat to prove that hot spring wasn't a fluke with a 370 bomb that left his bat at 103.9 miles per hour.

It's worth remembering that a season isn't defined by one at-bat. Capra entered today 5-for-37 (.156) in his MLB career, so he'll still need to do a little more to prove that he's a bonafide MLB player.

While Capra was (and likely still would be) redundant on the Blue Jays' roster, it likely still stings a little bit for Blue Jays fans to see Capra hit a home run on a day when Toronto's offense struggled a bit against Zach Eflin.

Capra's home run was the only damage the Brewers were able to do against Rodón, who went 5 2/3 innings. Toronto benefitted from two home runs to the short porch in right field against Brewers starter Freddy Peralta.
