Former Blue Jays' closer quietly having a renassaince in Colorado

During this past offseason, former Toronto Blue Jays' closer Jordan Romano signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Los Angeles Angels. This was after he spent the 2025 season with the Philadelphia Phillies, where he posted a 2-4 record and an 8.23 ERA in 49 games.

Romano hoped to bounce back after signing with the Angels, but his tenure with the AL West club proved to be a disaster. In 11 appearances for the Angels he posted an 0-2 record and a 10.13 ERA.

Due to these struggles, the Angels designated him for assignment and then released him in late April. After this, he signed a minor league contract with the Colorado Rockies in May before landing a call-up from the NL West team in July. Since then, the former Blue Jays reliever has been quite solid for Colorado.

In 16 appearances so far with the Rockies, Romano has posted nine saves, 15 strikeouts, and a 2.30 ERA. With numbers like these, he has become a nice part of the Rockies' bullpen and is showing that he still has the potential to be a solid closer in the majors.

He also made a bit of Canadian baseball history. His last save was the 126th of his MLB career, which put him third all-time among Canadian relievers.

Sometimes, a change of scenery can help a player, and it appears that Romano is finding his fit with the Rockies after rough stints with the Phillies and Angels. If he keeps up this kind of pitching up down the stretch for Colorado, it could help his chances of getting a nice contract this offseason. This remains the case whether he signs a contract extension with the Rockies or tests free agency this winter.

Looking back at Romano's time with the Blue Jays

For the majority of his time with the Blue Jays, Romano was a high-impact reliever for the Blue Jays. From 2020 to 2023, he had a 2.90 ERA or lower, so he was certainly reliable during that point in his tenure with Toronto. He also recorded 36 saves during both the 2022 and 2023 seasons. He also made the All-Star Game during both of those campaigns.

However, Romano's final season with the Blue Jays in 2024 was a tough one for the 6-foot-5 righty. He was limited to just 15 games for Toronto that campaign, where he posted a 1-2 record, eight saves, 13 strikeouts, and a 6.59 ERA. His final appearance for Toronto was in late May that season, as he underwent right elbow surgery before being officially shut down for the season in September.

While Romano has had a rough few seasons, he seems to be putting it back together with the Rockies. Some of that might have to do with the fact that Rockies bullpen coach Matt Buschmann was also in Toronto during Romano's best season's there.

It will be interesting to see how the former Blue Jays closer finishes off the season from here and whether he becomes a sought after commodity in the offseason.
