In a move that's been widely expected for the past six months or so, the Chicago White Sox are finally trading away Garrett Crochet, their best player and staff ace. In a sick, twisted gut punch for the Toronto Blue Jays, the team acquiring Crochet is their division rival, the Boston Red Sox.

According to a slew of MLB insiders, led by Julian McWilliams of The Boston Globe, the Red Sox's top catching prospect, Kyle Teel, is part of the package heading back to Chicago. Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic rounded out the news with the full deal.

This is just the latest development in what's been a rough 24 hours or so for the Blue Jays. They fell back a few spots in the Draft Lottery, said goodbye to Spencer Horwitz and also lost Max Fried to the division rival New York Yankees.

Red Sox landing Garrett Crochet is bad news for the Blue Jays

The early theme of the offseason for the Blue Jays has been one of disappointment. They've been "in on" nearly every single high-end free agent but have only come away with Yimi Garcia and a trade acquisition of Andres Gimenez. Watching division rivals continue to make moves while Toronto's pitching staff remains untouched simply won't be able to continue for much longer.

Since every single other team in the AL East continues to make moves, a long-term contract for Corbin Burnes feels like it's in Toronto's near future. He's easily the best-available starting pitcher and it's time the club comes away with one of their top targets. All offseason long, Burnes has been linked to the Blue Jays, but so has many other free agents. This time, Toronto's going to have to put their money where their mouth is and bring in the big fish at all costs.
