Could the 2025 World Series feature the same matchup from 32 years ago?

If these top two teams get to the World Series it will be a rematch from a memorable showdown in the 1990's.

The 2025 Toronto Blue Jays are seeking their first AL East Division title in a decade and going into Friday night's games they have the best record in the American League at 89-64. That bodes well for the championship aspirations of this team since finishing first place in the AL has helped them historically. Both of the Blue Jays' World Series championships in 1992 and 1993 have come when the team finished first in the AL.

It has been 32 years since their last championship banner, and ironically the team they beat in that series could once again be their opponents if they were to reach the 2025 World Series.

Blue Jays and Phillies could potentially clash in 2025 World Series

Just like the Blue Jays, the Philadelphia Phillies are in the conversation to win the 2025 World Series. The Phillies recently clinched their second consecutive NL East Division title. Both teams have talented rosters put together to win and it would be poetic for both teams to meet in the 2025 World Series.

The Blue Jays finished as the AL's best team in 1993 when they won the World Series over the Phillies with Joe Carter's iconic walk-off home run to win the series in Game 6. That same year, the Phillies finished with the National League's second best record.

Today, the Blue Jays are atop the AL and the Phillies are the second best team in the NL. With the status of both teams, history could repeat itself 32 years later with the Blue Jays and Phillies playing in the World Series while finishing in the same spot in the standings.

If the Blue Jays and Phillies were to meet in the World Series, it would shape up to be a solid series with plenty of talented players and star power on both teams' rosters. The Blue Jays carry the names of Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Bo Bichette, George Springer, and Alejandro Kirk while the Phillies have Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner, and Nick Castellanos.

The Blue Jays and Phillies haven't been estranged since that 1993 World Series. Since the introduction of interleague play, the two teams have been paired up frequently over the years, and even more so now with a balanced schedule. In 2025 they played six games against each other in June. After the Blue Jays won two of the three games in Toronto in the first series, the Phillies swept the following three-game series in Philadelphia, that was the last time the Blue Jays were swept in a three-game series this season.

The 2025 season is close to ending, but the Blue Jays and Phillies will be two teams to keep an eye on for a potential World Series matchup in October.
