In a couple hours, the Toronto Blue Jays open their season against the Baltimore Orioles.
And, according to a plethora of rumors from noted MLB insiders, it seems like there's a chance that Vladimir Guerrero Jr. be inked a long-term contract by then.
The discussion around a potential Guerrero extension started yesterday when rumors began to bubble up that the Blue Jays were preparing to offer Guerrero a massive extension that was fitting of the number that he wanted.
Last night, Sportsnet's Shi Davidi appeared on MLB Tonight to discuss the rumors, where he reinforced the idea that both sides know what the other wants in regard to getting a deal done.

"There has just been a lot of back and forth and I thin right now it's clear to both sides what it's going to take to get a deal done," Davidi said. "It's baseball eve, so it makes sense that they'd try one more time before the regular season begins. But will they get there?"
Davidi then went on to say that he thought the deal would have gotten done before Guerrero's self-imposed deadline of Feb. 18.
About 12 hours later, ESPN insider Buster Olney confirmed that the Blue Jays made another offer to Guerrero, but that a gap still remains in the talks.

Last week, Blue Jays president Mark Shapiro said that he was optimistic that the Blue Jays would be able to offer Guerrero an extension that would make him a Blue Jay for life.
According to previous reporting from The Athletic's Ken Rosenthal, it'll take a contract worth $500 million in present value.
When talks broke down between Guerrero and the Blue Jays the first time, the two sides were reportedly $50 million apart. It remains to be seen how far apart they are today.
At this point, it seems like Guerrero's initial deadline for extension talks was more a negotiating tactic than anything else since it's clear that he's been willing to engage in talks thoughout spring training.
But this seems like the last gasp for any talks this season. Guerrero's extension (or lack thereof) will be a storyline throughout the season, but both sides neogiating for a contract during the season could be even more of a distraction.
First pitch against the Orioles is less than five hours away. Will that be enough time for these two sides to meet in the middle?
