CBS names these two difference-makers as early Blue Jays offseason targets

While the Toronto Blue Jays were primarily sellers at the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline, they also acquired star pitcher Jose Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels. With that, it is clear that the Blue Jays have the goal of bouncing back and being a playoff team again next season.

Yet, with the Blue Jays trading away multiple former key players this season, they should be on the hunt for new talent this offseason. Due to this, it would not be surprising if they were very active in trade talks this offseason.

Now, the Blue Jays are already being viewed as a potential offseason suitor for two notable players.

In a recent article for CBS Sports, Mike Axisa named the Blue Jays as a potential landing spot for both Cincinnati Reds pitcher Hunter Greene and Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan.

When noting that both of these two are high-impact players when performing at their best, it would not be surprising if the Blue Jays targeted them this offseason. They each would have the potential to be outstanding additions to the Blue Jays' roster as they look to become contenders again during the 2027 season. Although, there is a huge caveat that Greene has undergone season ending surgery and won't be back until late in the year, next summer.

Why the Blue Jays should make a serious push for both Greene and Kwan this offseason

While the Blue Jays acquired Soriano from the Angels ahead of the trade deadline, it is clear that they should still be looking to strengthen their pitching rotation this offseason. This is because they traded Kevin Gausman at the trade deadline and are entering the offseason with pending UFA pitchers like Shane Bieber and Max Scherzer. With this, the Blue Jays should be on the hunt for pitching help this offseason, and landing Greene would provide them with just that once he is healthy enough to return.

While Greene has been dealing with elbow issues for much of this season, he is exactly the kind of young star pitcher the Blue Jays should be willing to take a gamble on. The 27-year-old has been dominant when healthy in recent seasons and could provide the Blue Jays' rotation with a major boost if acquired. While he has a 6.83 ERA in five appearances this season, he had a 2.76 ERA in 2025 and a 2.75 ERA in 2024.

Greene is also under team control through the 2028 season and has a club option for the 2029 campaign. With this, he would be much more than a rental for the Blue Jays, and trading for him while he's injured could lower the cost significantly.

As for Kwan, the Blue Jays could benefit by adding another outfielder to their roster this offseason. They notably traded Daulton Varsho to the Houston Astros ahead of the deadline, so it could make sense for them to bring in a two-time All-Star like Kwan this offseason.

Kwan has appeared in 106 games this season with the Guardians, where he has one home run, 21 RBI, and a .260 batting average. This is after the four-time Gold Glove winner recorded 11 home runs, 29 doubles, 56 RBI, and a .272 batting average in 156 games for Cleveland in 2025. Overall, he provides a bit of everything when playing at his best, so it would make a lot of sense for the Blue Jays to try to add him.

The Blue Jays certainly have their work cut out for them this offseason but adding players of this calibre is exactly what they need to do.
