Option 2: Trade for Bregman

The Red Sox are at a crossroads here. Do they stick with Bregman, who inked signed a three-year, $120 million contract this past offseason that includes an opt-out after this season? Or do they stick with Devers and his massive contract?

Boston could be in a spot where they feel handcuffed to have to choose between one of the two players for the sake of the roster. If Bregman keeps up his hot start to the season, it wouldn’t be surprising to see him opt out at the end of the year. He’s already been worth 2.3 bWAR, slashing .311/.384/.567 with a 163 OPS+ and nine home runs.

While Bregman's deal would be easier for the Blue Jays to swallow, both players would likely require the same kind of extreme return in any trade.

That said, Bregman is the polar opposite of Devers defensively. He’s won the American League Gold Glove two years in a row, and he's been worth 26.2 defensive fWAR since 2018, which is fifth-best mark among third baseman in that time. It also seems clear that the Blue Jays have some interest in what he can bring to the table.

Either player would be a huge boon to any team's roster, but who knows if we'll ever get to a point where either of them hit the trade market.

Recent reports suggest Devers and team owner John Henry have talked, and insiders believe Devers will start taking groundballs at first and transition into a full-time first baseman.

And even if that happens, the Blue Jays front office should pick up the phone and see what it would take to bring either of them to Toronto.
