With the Toronto Blue Jays and their 2025 MLB season on the line on Sunday, they handed the ball to a young pitcher named Trey Yesavage who began the year in Single-A Dunedin. That pitching phenom managed to traverse four minor league levels and reach the majors by the end of the season to play in impactful games for the Blue Jays in the postseason.
So what does Yesavage do in just his sixth big league start of the year after struggling in his previous playoff appearance? Nerves, intensity and all, he would give Toronto the clutch performance that they needed to tie the ALCS at three games a piece with a 6-2 win over the Seattle Mariners. Yesavage would go 5.2 strong innings, giving up just two earned runs on six hits with three walks and seven strikeouts.

But more significantly, he delivered in a way like a seasoned elite veteran pitcher would have done under similar circumstances. In doing so, Yesavage found ways to get out of tough jams all night. Early on, Yesavage used the strikeout effectively to neutralize the bulk of the Mariners’ order in his first go-around in the lineup.

But later on when he ran into some control issues, rather than relying just on the strikeout, he managed to induce three big rally-killing double plays on ground balls, including two with the bases loaded to diffuse any potential chance of a comeback for the Mariners in Game 6. Moreover, the nonchalant calmness and poise that he showed in pulling it off was definitely off the charts.

That was exactly why Yesavage received a well-deserved standing ovation when he left the mound in the sixth inning. He did things that a prime Max Scherzer would do. Doing it at only 22-years-old made it that much more impressive and eye popping.
With that performance, Yesavage is now 2-1 this postseason with a 4.20 ERA, 1.13 WHIP, along with 22 strikeouts in just 15 innings of work in three playoff starts.

With all hands on deck for Game 7 of the ALCS for the Blue Jays, they will do all they can to try and book their ticket to the World Series. But most importantly, Toronto wouldn’t even have had that chance without the amazing work of Yesavage in delivering in perhaps the Blue Jays’ biggest game of the season in Game 6.
