Blue Jays' World Series celebration's also highlights how quickly championship windows can close

The Toronto Blue Jays of 2026 honoured the Blue Jays of 1992 and 1993 in a pre-game ceremony on Saturday (Jul. 18). Part of the celebration was to unveil a statue that commemorated Joe Carter's World Series winning home run from the '93 World Series. While, as Carter said, the moment was about all of them, as they won those series together.

One note that was brought up in one of the video packages that played during the ceremony was the fact that '93 was no guarantee after winning it all in '92. The Blue Jays had a massive roster overhaul, from one year to the next. Gone were Jimmy Key, Tom Henke, David Cone, David Wells and Kelly Gruber to name a few. But in '93 they managed to get all the way back to the pinnacle and captured a second straight title.

It highlighted the fact that championship windows are incredibly hard to keep open. Sure, the baseball landscape in the early 1990's was very different from what it looks like today, but the fact remains only three teams have won back-to-back titles since the free agency era began in the 1970's, and the Blue Jays are one of them.

Unfortunately, they are still searching for their first title since 1993, and the 2026 Blue Jays felt like they were going to put themselves in contention to ending that drought. After getting to within two outs of winning it all in 2025 - the Blue Jays entered the year as one of the favourites to at least get to the World Series this year. However, they are far off their goal right now as they have a 46-52 record and are chasing the final Wild Card spot.

It also highlighted how sometimes, teams just catch fire or find that magic ingridient where everything just clicks and the breaks just go their way. That happened in 2025 for the Blue Jays - it has not happened in 2026.

What makes the '26 season arguably the most frustrating is that the moves the Blue Jays made during the offseason to try and increase their chances at a World Series title have actually worked out. Bringing Dylan Cease, Kazuma Okamoto and Tyler Rogers have paid off. Cease was an All-Star and a front runnner for the AL Cy Young award. Okamoto is having a record setting rookie season. Rogers is one of the most reliable arms in the Blue Jays' bullpen.

But the returning core of players just hasn't played like they did a year ago. Injuries has taken a lot of the blame, but under perfomance can't be over looked from the likes of George Springer, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Daulton Varsho.

Blue Jays may have gained some inspiration from World Series champions

The pregame festivities were capped off by World Series hero Carter telling the current iteration of the Blue Jays that "we'd like to celebrate a few more championships in the city of Toronto, so lets go!" The Blue Jays then grinded out a 1-0 win over the AL Central leading White Sox to even the three game series.

There's still a long way to go in 2026 for the Blue Jays to over come the hole they have dug themselves into. But if they can use the inspiration from the championship celebration to get the ball rolling, maybe, just maybe, it will give them enough in the tank to at least give themselves a shot by the trade deadline.
