Blue Jays trade Jeff Hoffman to Twins for three prospects

The Toronto Blue Jays continue what has been an eventful trade deadline, sending out relief pitcher Jeff Hoffman to the Minnesota Twins.

The deal was first reported by Ken Rosenthal of The Athletic.

Hoffman was rumoured as someone who could potentially be moved, however nothing was quite certain. Hoffman is in year two of a three-year deal he signed with the Blue Jays after the 2024 season, so there was no urgency to deal him in the same way that there was for other players the Blue Jays moved. 

This trade continues the hybrid approach for the Blue Jays this deadline, headlined by the acquisition of José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels.

Hoffman was one of the best relievers on the trade market. His 3.94 ERA may seem slightly subpar, however his underlying metrics are elite. Hoffman through 48 innings has posted 14.06 K/9, 2.49 FIP and 26.5 K-BB%.

In return, the Blue Jays are acquiring three minor leaguers in Dasan Hill, John Klein and Dameury Pena. According to MLB Pipeline, Hill is ranked seventh on the Twins top 30 prospects and Klein is ranked 17th. Pena is unranked in the Twins top 30. 

The Blue Jays will also receive $250,000 in international bonus pool money.

Did the Blue Jays make out well in this trade?

Hoffman’s value could seem wildly different depending on who you ask. However, teams are smart enough to identify tools and talent as opposed to surface level stats like ERA that do not tell much of a story.

Hoffman could be argued as the best reliever who got moved this deadline, and that is reflected in his value.

Hill is 20 years old in high-A with a 94th percentile strikeout rate. He sports a 60 grade fastball that can touch 99 mph with a 55 grade curveball and 60 grade slider. His issue is the free pass, as his BB/9 sits at 7.40 in 2026. These numbers come across 45 innings in 16 starts. The control issue is not ideal, however the stuff is undeniable and makes Hill a high upside pitcher.

Klein, 24,  is an MLB ready pitcher who averages roughly 95 mph on his fastball. He boasts above average strikeout rates, generally sitting between 10.50-11.50 K/9 in the minor leagues since 2025, while also posting roughly an average walk rate in 2026.

Dameury Pena is a 20-year old infielder in hitting .300 with a .373 OBP across A-ball and high-A this season. His plate skills are his best trait, walking more than he strikes out during much of his minor league time.
