The Toronto Blue Jays are going to be an intriguing team to watch during this offseason. After struggling during the 2026 season and missing the playoffs, they should be looking to make multiple new additions to their roster this offseason.
One area that the Blue Jays need to focus on is their bullpen. Toronto should be looking to add at least one experienced relief pitcher to supplement a bullpen that really held it's own this past season. As a team the Blue Jays' relief corps had the seventh best ERA in MLB (3.57) and 11th best FIP (3.93).
But to combat the expected regression that happens every year an addition or two should be made. That addition could be from a really interesting name being tied to the club - a familiar name from Minnesota who is hitting free agency.
According to The Minnesota Star Tribune's Bobby Nightengale, Twins reliever Taylor Rogers is interested in pitching for the Blue Jays next season. It is not difficult to understand why, as Taylor's twin brother is current Blue Jays' reliever Tyler Rogers.
With Rogers wanting to join his brother in Toronto, the Blue Jays should seriously consider taking a chance on him in free agency. While signing him would make for a cool story, that is not the only reason why the Blue Jays should take a gamble on him.
Why Taylor Rogers is worth a one-year gamble in Toronto
Rogers has shown during his career that he can be a dependable relief pitcher when performing at his best. An affordable one-year contract shouldn't be out of the question at this point.
The 35-year-old left-hander had mixed results this season with the Twins, as he posted a 6-4 record and a 4.33 ERA in 65 games. He had an 8.06 K/9 and 4.62 BB/9 in 60.1 innings pitched. Yet, when looking at other recent seasons, he could be a bounce-back candidate.
From 2023 to 2025, Rogers had an ERA under 4.00 each season. This included him posting a 2.40 ERA in 2024 with the San Francisco Giants and a 3.38 ERA split between the Cincinnati Reds and Chicago Cubs in 2025. He also posted big strikeout numbers over a six-year stretch from 2019-2024. That's when he had an 11.35 K/9 rate and 2.62 BB/9 rate.
His 385 strikeouts in 305.1 innings was the 12th most strikeouts among qualified relievers over that time. This shows he was a very effective pitcher not very long ago
Over the course of his 11-year MLB career, Rogers has played with the San Diego Padres, Milwaukee Brewers, Giants, Reds, Cubs, and Twins. He has posted a 37-40 record with a 3.44 ERA, and 680 strikeouts. With numbers like these, the 2021 MLB All-Star has had a nice career and it would be a great story if he could have another season playing alongside his twin brother. They were teammates with San Francisco in 2023 and 2024.
