The Rafael Devers trade has been one of the craziest things to happen in basebal this season and the trade deadline still is over a month away. The future of the Red Sox has so many wild possibilities to consider now that there is so much money to work with and that could be a problem for the Blue Jays moving forward as one of their star players is set to hit free agency.
Blue Jays are going to have a really tough bidding war with Bo Bichette now that the Red Sox have extra money.
That star is Bo Bichette as the Blue Jays failed to extend him after signing Vladimir Guerrero Jr. long term. Keeping this duo in Toronto feels like a priority for this team and fanbase, but now that Boston has some flexibility in spending, Bichette could be the Red Sox's main target this offseason.
Bichette has officially bounced back from his forgettable 2024 season and has been Toronto's leadoff hitter this season. He has been great too, belting 10 home runs with a .754 OPS and a .275 batting average. He has driven in 44 runs, being an anchor of this solid run scoring lineup. This bounce back campaign from Bichette has him set as the top shortstop on the approaching free agent market. Trevor Story, the Red Sox current shortstop, will also hit free agency making Boston a perfect fit.
Convincing Bichette to remain a Blue Jay should be easier if they can get to the postseason, making this trade deadline very important for Toronto. Not only will it make the road to the playoffs easier, but it is a great persuasive measure to convince Bichette to stay. Hopefully with however much they spend though, the Blue Jays leave room to go dollar for dollar with Boston in the offseason.
Devers cleared up so much money for Boston, so they may throw a massive offer Bichette's way. Bichette's father Dante also played a little with the Red Sox and that may be another measure Toronto will have to compete with in the negotiation period. This will be a big story to watch for this upcoming offseason. Toronto needs to work towards bringing Bichette back, but the Red Sox clearing up some significant space o their payroll will be a really difficult hurdle to jump over.
