On Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays were in a close battle with their division rivals New York Yankees when a worrisome play occurred during the top half of the sixth inning. Blue Jays shortstop Bo Bichette was attempting to score on a Nathan Lukes single to right field when he was injured on the play in a collision at home with Yankees catcher Austin Wells.

Perhaps with inclement weather occurring and the rain coming down hard, Bichette slid into home plate with his knees and shins first, rather than his feet. With Wells receiving the ball with ample time from the outfield, his legs blocking the plate would impact with the Jays star shortstop’s left leg, resulting in Bichette needing some assistance as he limped and hobbled gingerly off the field, as per Shi Davidi of Sportsnet.

Earlier in the game, Bichette had walked and scored the Jays only run of the game during the fourth inning when he came in on a force play on a ground ball by Isiah Kiner-Falefa. The Jays shortstop would also double on his next at-bat in the sixth inning, eventually leading up to the incident at the plate.

Toronto sure hopes that the injury isn’t as serious as it looks, as Bichette had not only been one of the Jays’ top hitters during the second half of the 2025 MLB season, but one of the best hitters in the entire league over that stretch.

In fact, in his past 30 games, the 27-year-old shortstop has been hitting a scorching .370 with a 1.025 OPS, along with a whopping 26 runs scored, five home runs and 25 RBIs to power the Jays’ lethal offensive attack. More notably, he had significantly improved his free-swinging approach at the plate at the same time, reducing his strikeout-to-walk ratio down to an elite 1:1 in the process.

In addition, Bichette’s most productive month throughout his seven-year MLB career had been the month of September. In fact, due to his exceptional performance back in 2002, it even helped him earn the nickname “SeptemBo” as coined by social media and fans.

As a result, the Jays can ill-afford to be without the services of their star shortstop for any significant period of time, especially during the heat of the playoff race that they are currently in. As we all wait for the wording, all Toronto and their loyal fans can do now is hope for the best-case scenario to come out of it and that Bichette will be back sooner than expected to continue to power the team to winning and success.
