This past Saturday, the Toronto Blue Jays placed outfielder Nathan Lukes on the 10-day IL due to a left hamstring strain. Lukes had suffered the injury on a running play on Friday in the game against the Cleveland Guardians. To help fill the void, the Blue Jays selected the contract of rising prospect Yohendrick Pinango and promoted him to the big league club.
Yohendrick Pinango is joining the #BlueJays in Toronto. He’s a LH bat-first corner outfielder with an .857 OPS and 3 HR in AAA this year. Hits the ball real hard.

He’s presumably here for Nathan Lukes (hamstring), on the taxi squad at the very least@ander_beisbol1 was on it
It didn’t take long for Pinango to get his feet wet in the majors as the 23-year-old outfielder promptly made his MLB debut on Sunday against the Guardians. The Blue Jays No. 10 prospect batted seventh for Toronto and quickly made an impact by recording his first major league hit off of Cleveland starter Slade Cecconi in the fourth inning. Pinango would finish the day going 1-for-2 as he was lifted for a pinch hitter in the sixth inning.

Blue Jays top prospect Yohendrick Pinango makes immediate impact in first MLB game of his career
It wasn’t too long ago when the Blue Jays actually exposed the 23-year-old prospect in the Rule 5 Draft this past offseason. Somehow, every MLB team passed on the opportunity to acquire Pinango as he went unclaimed to enable him to stay with the Toronto organization. In retrospect, the Blue Jays can now breathe a huge sigh of relief as he had been one of their hottest players in the minors this season.
Playing for the Triple-A Buffalo, Pinango has posted an impressive .288 average, .857 OPS, along with 10 runs scored, seven doubles, three home runs, 13 RBIs and two stolen bases in 22 games with the Bisons. This was coming off a strong 2025 minor league campaign in which he compiled a .258/.361/.430/.790 slash line with 15 home runs and 70 RBIs in 131 games split between Double-A New Hampshire and Buffalo.
But Pinango actually showed promising signs that he could have a huge 2026 year ahead of him when he wreaked havoc with Lara in the Venezuelan Winter League this past winter, amassing a .363 average, 1.159 OPS, with 24 runs scored, eight home runs and 31 RBIs in 24 games played.
As for Lukes, he was actually heating up at the time prior to his ill-timed injury. After starting the year hitting a miserable .065 with a .182 OPS and just two RBIs in his first 13 games with the Blue Jays, the 31-year-old outfielder drastically turned things around. In his following seven games, Lukes batted .524 with a 1.260 OPS, with three runs scored, four doubles, six RBIs and just a single strikeout in 22 plate appearances before suffering a hamstring injury that has him currently on the shelf.
In the meantime, the Blue Jays will look to Pinango to assist in holding down the fort in the outfield as Toronto await for reinforcements in the coming days to weeks. With his bat being his main calling card, hopefully it can help provide a spark in the Blue Jays’ offense.
