Being able to acknowledge and recognize talent early for a promising prospect can do wonders for an MLB organization’s future and success. The Toronto Blue Jays were able to do just that a decade ago when they signed Vladimir Guerrero Jr. during the summer of 2015 at the young age of 16. Fast forward 10 years and Guerrero has become the face of the franchise, likely for life after his massive 14-year, $500 million extension.

Apparently, the Jays may now have another potential franchise-altering piece locked in very early once again in 2025. According to MLB insider Héctor Gomez, Toronto has a verbal agreement with Dominican phenom Ángel Montás for a whopping $5.7 million.

As of this moment, Montás is expected to be the top international prospect available in the 2028 international market. And with that signing amount, he would have the highest MLB signing bonus ever for an international free agent. In terms of the potential validity of the report, even ESPN insider Jeff Passan has further confirmed and elaborated on the deal during Sportsnet’s Blair and Barker Show.

So what do we know about this potential phenom that could be the “next big thing”? According to Avery Chenier, Montás is an infielder/outfielder that has already filled out at six foot and 185 pounds at just 14 years-old. Prospect Select Scout has indicated that as a 13-year-old, he has already been producing exit velocities measuring above 100 mph

To give an idea of how Montás plays and his potential, here are a couple of clips demonstrating what he could ultimately bring to the Blue Jays in a few years time. First of all, we have Montás showing his smooth strokes at the plate.

Then we have Montás again demonstrating his ability to barrel to all fields with his bat.

Although nothing is actually official until another three years time and anything can happen from now until then, it is quite comforting to know that the Jays are already thinking way ahead into the future to hopefully maintain a successful winning product on the field for the coming decade.
