Blue Jays pitchers set the tone early for a season full of whiffs

Turns out, Kevin Gausman and Dylan Cease are pretty good.

The Toronto Blue Jays had their early 2026 momentum rudely halted by a beatdown at the hands of the Colorado Rockies, but that shouldn't take away from what was an incredible Opening Weekend.

The team swept the not-Oakland Athletics in a trio of close games, behind some truly incredible pitching performances from the top of the rotation. In fact, Blue Jays pitchers struck out 50 hitters, marking a new team record in a three-game series and perfectly scripting their 50th season celebration. It's not often that you'll see a pitching staff record 57.5% of their outs via the strikeout, so enjoy this dominance while it lasts.

This was obviously a team-wide effort, so let's give everyone their flowers.

Blue Jays' ace duo looks primed to carry the rotation after Opening Weekend dominance

Kevin Gausman got things kicked off with a bang in his first Opening Day start with the Blue Jays, setting a team record with 11 strikeouts in the first game of the regular season. It was truly a masterpiece befitting of the longtime ace, and he got some backup in the form of Louis Varland (one strikeout) and Jeff Hoffman (who struck out four batters in one inning while blowing the save).

Dylan Cease more than followed suit in the next game, setting yet another team record with 12 strikeouts in his Blue Jays debut. The combination of him and Gausman immediately gives the Blue Jays one of the best 1-2 punches in the league, which will make them a near-impossible out once October rolls around.

The bullpen was far less steady following Cease's outing, allowing six runs as the game went into extra innings. Still, they managed to tack on another seven strikeouts as a unit, bringing the total to 19 for the game and 35 for the series.

Fill-in starter Eric Lauer proved to be the unsung hero of pitching staff, as he fired off 5.1 innings of two-run ball en-route to a victory. His nine strikeouts — combined with six more from the relief corps — made it an even 50 in three games. If Lauer continues to pitch like that, it'll be almost impossible to remove him from the rotation once everyone is healthy.

Speaking of which, the fact that the Blue Jays set this record without any of Trey Yesavage, Shane Bieber, or José Berrios taking a start makes the feat all the more impressive. The good news is that each of those pitchers is taking steps toward returning to Toronto; if all three prove to be healthy going forward, this pitching staff could challenge for the all-time strikeout record, set by the Houston Astros in 2018 (1,687).
