Blue Jays new look rotation could surprise and lead Toronto to a strong finish in 2026

The Toronto Blue Jays had several of their core starting pitchers on expiring contracts heading into the trade deadline. Fans had expected their rotation to take a hit as the Jays close out the final two months of the 2026 season.

However, after some surprising deadline moves that included adding some young and veteran pitching talent to offset some of the departed players, the Blue Jays’ new look rotation could potentially surprise with a strong finish for the rest of their year.

It appeared it would have been tough for the Blue Jays to recover from the loss of their ace Kevin Gausman. After all, having shown time and time again to be a big-game pitcher for Toronto during the past four seasons, his rare breed was expected to be quite hard to replace.

But the Blue Jays might have managed to make their rotation stronger down the stretch with the shocking acquisition of José Soriano from the Los Angeles Angels. At just 27-years-old with all the potential to become a front-line starter, Soriano is in the midst of the best season of his career, compiling a 9-6 record with a solid 3.29 ERA, 1.25 WHIP along with 127 strikeouts in 123 innings pitched while with the Angels.

However, walks has always been his Achilles heel, as his 57 free passes this year currently rank him first among AL starters in 2026. But think of how the Blue Jays helped resolved that very issue for Robbie Ray back in 2021. So if the Blue Jays can do something similar to rectify Soriano’s consistency with his command, he could potentially take off just like how Ray did in his Cy Young campaign.

Soriano’s numbers alone have been far better than what Gausman put up all season for the Jays, which means Toronto received an instant upgrade to their starting five heading into the stretch run.

Blue Jays deepens rotation beyond José Soriano addition

Blue Jays also added depth pitching pieces in Jameson Taillon and Spencer Arrighetti. Prior to their arrival in Toronto, the next man up for the Jays if they needed any reinforcements for their rotation would likely have come from some of their young pitching prospects in the minors. But instead, they have two experienced MLB pitchers in Taillon and Arrighetti that could instantly slot into the starting five without Toronto missing a beat, making them that much stronger in starting pitching depth going forward.

So as crazy as it may sound, the Jays might have a better chance now without Gausman at going out with a strong finish.

With a starting rotation that now consists of Soriano, Dylan Cease, Shane Bieber, Trey Yesavage and Max Scherzer, with Taillon and Arrighetti ready to jump in whenever needed, Toronto is ready for a run down the stretch that no one would have expected just a few days ago. At the very least a shot at finishing .500 is a real possibility.
