Blue Jays named top trade fit for Tigers All-Star infielder

Could the Blue Jays bolster their infield by making a trade for Tigers star infielder Gleyber Torres?

The Toronto Blue Jays are going to be a team to watch very closely between now and the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. The Blue Jays have performed below expectations so far this season, only getting back to the .500 mark on Jun. 22 at 39-39.

One of the reasons for their slow start has been injury trouble and some under performing players, so the team should be looking to make multiple additions to their roster at the deadline. While bringing in pitching help should be Toronto's biggest priority, they would also benefit by adding another high-impact infielder to their roster before the deadline.

The Blue Jays are being viewed as a top potential trade fit for one of baseball's most notable infielder trade candidates. In a recent article for MLB.com, Mark Feinsand discussed 10 trade candidates for the upcoming deadline and named potential fits for each player. Among the players discussed was Detroit Tigers infielder Gleyber Torres, and the Blue Jays were the first trade fit named for him.

The other teams that Feinsand viewed as possible fits for Torres were the Los Angeles Dodgers and Cleveland Guardians.

With the Blue Jays needing another middle infielder, it would make sense if they made a push for Torres. The three-time All-Star is having a strong start to the season with the Tigers, as he has four home runs, 18 RBI, and a .280 batting average in 43 games. This is after he had 16 home runs and 74 RBI last season for Detroit.

With Torres being a pending unrestricted free agent and Tigers sporting an ugly 34-44 record, there is a good chance that he could be moved by the deadline. If the Tigers do shop Torres, it would make sense if the Blue Jays tried to steal him from Detroit.

Torres is not the only Tigers trade candidate the Blue Jays should target

With the Tigers likely to be sellers, Torres is not the only player on their roster whom they should consider targeting. Superstar pitcher Tarik Skubal would be a massive addition to the Blue Jays' rotation and could help them go on a run this fall if acquired. However, the same can be said about every other contender, so Toronto will have competition if they pursue him.

The Tigers also have starting pitcher Casey Mize who could be a fantastic addition to their roster. The 6-foot-3 righty has a 2.58 ERA in 10 appearances so far this season. This is after he was an All-Star for the first time in 2025, posting a 14-6 record and a 3.87 ERA in 28 games.

Ultimately, the Tigers are standing out as a prime potential trading partner for the Blue Jays. They have multiple players who would fit well on the Blue Jays' roster, and it will be interesting to see if Toronto lands at least one of them from here.
