Blue Jays may need this prospect more than ever now after debacle against White Sox

Looks like Toronto will need to thrust Valenzuela into more action than expected in the coming days

When the Toronto Blue Jays acquired Brandon Valenzuela from the San Diego Padres at the trade deadline last season to add valuable catching depth to the organization, they were likely hoping to allow him to fully developed before easing him into major league action once he was ready.

However, after the unfortunate thumb injury suffered by Alejandro Kirk against the Chicago White Sox on Friday, followed by what transpired in Saturday’s debacle the very next day, the Blue Jays may now need the newly promoted Valenzuela to step in right away in order to keep the ship afloat for Toronto.

Perhaps added pressure and expectations ended up getting to Blue Jays’ usual backup catcher Tyler Heineman, as he had a disastrous outing against the White Sox in his first game after taking over for Kirk in the starting catcher’s role.

With the Blue Jays trailing 4-2 late in the seventh inning, Toronto was rallying with the bases loaded with only one out. Heineman made a big running mistake when he was thrown out at third base on a sacrifice fly by fellow teammate Nathan Lukes. On the play, the Blue Jays got to within one run, but it negated the opportunity for Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to come to the plate with two runners on base as it ended the inning instead.

If that one didn’t hurt the Blue Jays, the defensive miscue during the bottom of the eighth inning certainly did as Heineman would overthrow Ernie Clement during a rundown that led to two unearned White Sox runs to put the game out of reach. Chicago would go on to take the second game of the series by a final score of 6-3.

The Blue Jays expect better out of the 34-year-old veteran, and Heineman was the first to admit he did not have a good couple of games. This also stemmed from Friday's contest in which Kirk was initially injured. Heinemann came into the game as a defensive replacement and promptly threw the ball away on a bunt that led to the game tying run to cross the plate in the bottom of the tenth.

He spoke to reporters after the game and was visibly emotional about the outcomes, saying, "The last two games, those losses, they're on me. Sugarcoat it any way you want to, (yeah) there's other things going on, but they're on me. I just need to find a way to not let this stuff snowball.”

To be fair, Heineman sure hasn’t disappointed so far with his bat, currently batting .400 with an .855 OPS, along with three runs scored in 10 at-bats. But he will need to tighten up the other aspects of his game to ensure that he isn’t costing the team crucial runs in the process.

As for Valenzuela, he had made a strong impression with the Blue Jays’ brass this year after putting together a promising spring in which he compiled a .304 average, .849 OPS, along with three runs scored, one home run and five RBIs in 11 games played. He has followed that up with a solid start to his 2026 campaign in Triple-A Buffalo where he has recorded two runs scored, one home runs and four RBIs in four games of action with the Bisons.

More importantly, Valenzuela has been strong defensively so far as well, sporting a perfect 1.000 fielding percentage behind the plate while throwing out two of three baserunners in the process. The Blue Jays could certainly use some of that defensive acumen along with the energy he could bring in making his debut with the club going forward.

Hopefully, the tandem of Heineman and Valenzuela will help hold down the fort for Toronto as they await for the eventual return of Kirk, however long that it may take.
