Blue Jays may finally be seeing the version of Brandon Barriera they drafted

Earlier this year, Toronto Blue Jays top pitching prospect Brandon Barriera appeared to be well on his way to a redemption season in 2026 when he began to find his form heading into the month of May. Unfortunately, Barriera would suffer another tough break as a tweak in his back had ultimately held him out of action for two months before returning to the field in late July.

However, after shaking off some initial rust, the Blue Jays former first round draft pick could finally be back on track as shown from his dominant showing in a game with the Single-A Dunedin on Tuesday.

Barriera pitched four strong innings against the New York Yankees Single-A affiliate Tampa Tarpons, holding them both hitless and scoreless in the process along with six strikeouts in just 48 pitches. More significantly, he generated a 63% whiff rate with his devastating slider that induced four of his six punchouts. That outing is perhaps his best performance in the Blue Jays' minor league system to date.

Barriera has been beset by injuries, but is slowly beginning to show his full potential to the Blue Jays

As a former No. 2 prospect in the Blue Jays’ system in 2023, Toronto likely expected more of this type of showing from Barriera. However, a slew of injuries held him back. He underwent Tommy John surgery, which put him out of action for practically the entire 2024 season (albeit one game) and most of the 2025 season.

Fortunately, at just the young age of 22, Barriera now has ample opportunity to re-establish himself and prove to everyone why he was a former first round pick from the 2022 MLB Draft right out of American Heritage High School.

In his four minor league seasons so far in the Blue Jays organization, he has compiled an 0-6 record with a 5.76 ERA, 1.39 WHIP, along with 63 strikeouts in 54.2 total innings pitched over 24 starts. Given his utmost potential, it is actually quite surprising that Barriera is still seeking the first win of his pro-baseball career.

But if he can put together more performances like the one he demonstrated from Tuesday night, it shouldn’t be long before the 22-year-old lefty will register that, plus many more in what the Jays hope will be a long, impactful and productive career with Toronto.
