The Toronto Blue Jays swung what seems to be a sell-side trade to kick off their weekend, shipping out reliable reliever Tommy Nance for a talented but inexperienced prospect in Ryan Sprock. Suggesting that the team is waving the white flag on the 2026 season is premature, but it certainly seems like the front office is open to retooling the roster for a more serious postseason push in 2027.
To that end, they also signed Daz Cameron to a minor-league deal just before that Sprock trade. Now 29-years-old, the son of former major leaguer Mike Cameron was a first-round pick of the Houston Astros in 2015. He's spent the past decade slowly building his way up to the big leagues, playing 160 MLB games throughout his career (including 21 last year with the Milwaukee Brewers).
Cameron has spent this year raking in the KBO, hitting .287/.360/.473 (121 wRC+) with nine homers and steals apiece in the international league. He'll be assigned to Triple-A Buffalo, with the possibility of getting a late-season audition in Toronto if he impresses back in the states.

Blue Jays take low-risk swing on Daz Cameron, who can be useful outfield depth if season derails
Cameron is obviously some time removed from his days as a first-round pick, though he's a well-regarded outfield defender with some of his father's lauded power-speed combination. He's out of minor-league options, so flexibility will be an issue if he ever makes it to Toronto, but he's still in the pre-arb phase of his career. He could be a long-term piece of the puzzle if he can ever solve MLB pitching.
That, of course, is easier said than done. The 29-year-old has a career .200/.258/.326 (65 wRC+) slash line and has been worth -0.9 fWAR. Then again, he is a former top-100 prospect with a .792 OPS in over 2,000 Triple-A plate appearances. It doesn't hurt to take on that kind of upside, particularly now that Addison Barger has faced a setback in his rehab process. With Jesús Sánchez and Anthony Santander also on the IL, additional outfield depth isn't a bad thing.
In truth, though, Cameron's best path to Toronto is if the Blue Jays do commit to selling. Daulton Varsho is a popular name on the trade block, and his absence would open a big hole in center field (where Cameron has played 252 career innings). Failing that, this is a pure upside swing by a team that has been wanting for more offensive production all year long.
