It could be high fives all around for the Toronto Blue Jays if they can win on Sunday in Kansas City. A victory over the Royals not only would get Toronto off a four-game losing streak, it would get them into the MLB postseason.
Toronto has had several chances to clinch a postseason berth this week but have come up short on four straight occasions with two losses in Tampa Bay and two more in Kansas City.
Blue Jays Magic Number Update: Win and you're in!
The Blue Jays haven't suffered a four-game losing streak since July 27-29 which included both games of a double header in Baltimore against the Orioles. This current four-game slide also comes on the heels of the Blue Jays having won six in a row, which seems incredibly crucial now considering their division lead has dropped down to just a two game advantage over the New York Yankees.
The Blue Jays have been held to three runs total over the last four games, and outside of the 20-run outburst by the Royals on Friday, Toronto has only allowed 8 runs, losing two of the games by 2-1 scores. They have also scored more than two runs just once this week, when they beat Tampa 6-5 on Tuesday.
Toronto is turning to Trey Yesavage to try and get the momentum turning the right way, as the rookie will make his second big league start after fanning 9 batters over five innings in his MLB debut against the Rays on Monday. It's a start that's also being looked as an extended audition for Yesavage to showcase whether he could be an option in the Blue Jays pitching plans come October. There is an opening for Yesavage as José Berrios has been removed from the rotation and will pitch out of the bullpen for the rest of the regular season, while Chirs Bassitt landed on the 15-day IL on Saturday.

Entering Sunday, Toronto (89-65) still hold on to the best record in the American League, while the Yankees (87-68), the Mariners (86-69), the Red Sox (85-70) and the Tigers (85-70) are all within striking distance, with just four games separating Toronto and Detroit/Boston. However, if Toronto wins, neither the Red Sox nor the Tigers can surpass Toronto and get to 91 wins since they play each other next week and the Blue Jays hold the tiebreaker over both teams.
There's also the scenario where the Blue Jays can still clinch if the Tigers, Red Sox and Guardians all lose today. The magic number to just get to the playoffs for Toronto is sitting at one, while the number to clinch the division title remains at five.
