One of the major events at Major League Baseballs annual Winter Meetings is the Draft Lottery, which was just implemented a few years ago. Last year, the Blue Jays had the 20th pick in the draft - which was not decided from the Lottery as they were a playoff team - and selected Trey Yesavage, who is now the number one ranked prospect in Toronto's farm system according to MLB Pipeline.
Next year though, the Blue Jays will be able to select a player much sooner as they have landed the eighth overall pick for the 2025 MLB Draft. Toronto had a 7.5% chance of getting the first overall pick, which is determined by the teams win percentage from the season prior to the Lottery.
Toronto finished with a 74-88 record, leading to their fifth highest chance of the first overall pick. The teams tied for the highest were the Colorado Rockies and Miami Marlins who had a 22.5% chance.
Blue Jays land pick number eight in the Draft Lottery
The 2025 season has not started yet, so it is tough to determine who will be available by the time the Blue Jays will select their first rounder. MLB Pipeline has their top 100 draft prospects out already, which could gives fans an early glimpse of who could be available around the time Toronto makes their pick.
The eighth player listed here is a high school infielder from Mount Vernon High School in Washington. That is Xavier Neyens, who just turned 18 years old and is a primary third baseman committed to Oregon State University. His grades from MLB Pipeline are as following; Hit: 50 | Power: 65 | Run: 45 | Arm: 60 | Field: 50 | Overall: 55.
The 2025 MLB Draft will take place on July 13-15.
Still a long ways away from the draft and with the season approaching at all levels, there is no clear choice at pick number eight just yet. There are plenty of options to watch out for in 2025, but the Blue Jays will have a much sooner pick than they did in 2024.
