Blue Jays injury woes continue as Daulton Varsho leaves Friday’s game

Toronto can ill-afford to have any more players go down to ailments.

The Toronto Blue Jays just can’t seem to catch any luck this season when it comes to the health of their players. On Friday night in the game between Toronto and the Arizona Diamondbacks, another Blue Jays player bites the dust as outfielder Daulton Varsho had to leave the game in the third inning with left knee discomfort.

What made it more dumbfounded was the fact that it was unclear when Varsho sustained the knee injury. Whether it was during his at-bat in the first inning or during his play in the field, everything appeared to be fine for the 29-year-old outfielder. Late Friday night, early Saturday morning, it was revealed that Varsho entered the game feeling soreness from his quad down to his knee.

After the game, manager John Schneider told reporters that Varsho won't be undergoing an MRI and that he was considered day-to-day.

Blue Jays cant' afford another long-term injury

That is practically the last thing that Toronto needed right now. After all, Varsho had been one of the key contributors to the Blue Jays’ anemic offense to date, posting a solid .262 average, .795 OPS, along with eight runs scored, three home runs and seven RBIs in 19 total games played.

Moreover, he was in the midst of a seven-game hitting streak in which he had batted a stellar .379 with a 1.178 OPS, with five runs scored, two doubles, three home runs, six RBIs and a stolen base for good measure. Both of his eight runs scored and three home runs tied him for the current team lead.

Not to mention for a Blue Jays team that had also been uncharacteristically struggling with their defense in recent weeks, they can ill-afford to lose a guy who upgrades the defensive anytime he is in the field.

However, health has been a concern for Varsho in recent years as he missed the latter parts of the 2024 MLB season due to a right shoulder injury. That was followed by a 2025 campaign in which he managed to play in only 71 regular season games with Toronto as a result of his recovery from shoulder surgery from the prior year, along with a left hamstring strain that ended up putting him out close to two months of action.

Nevertheless, Varsho proved that he could be a significant force at the plate last season when he managed to register a stunning 20 home runs and 55 RBIs during the 71 games in which he suited up for the Blue Jays. Meaning that had he been healthy all of last year, he was actually on pace to top 40 home runs and 110 RBIs for the 2025 MLB season.

Hopefully, the injury to Varsho really is just a minor issue and he'll be back sooner rather than later.
