If the Toronto Blue Jays have been looking for some potential reinforcements for their bullpen, they won't be able to look at at least two internal options for the foreseeable future. According to Blue Jays manager John Schneider both Yimi García and Ryan Burr are both going to be on the injured list much longer than originally anticipated.

Garcia, who had been on the injured list due to a left ankle sprain, is now experiencing worrisome symptoms in his right elbow related to the ulnar nerve and will be further examined to see the extent of the injury. As for hard-luck reliever Ryan Burr, he will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery to repair a capsular injury, as both reported by Shi Davidi.

Blue Jays injury updates provide disappointing news for their relief corps

Entering the 2025 MLB season, the Blue Jays committed to a huge makeover of their relief corps hoping to bounce back from a dreadful 2024 campaign in which their bullpen ranked near the bottom of the entire league. García was relied on to be one of the key cogs to help lead the bullpen contingent returning to the team in free agency.

The 34-year-old veteran was sure doing his part of the deal as he posted three saves, six holds, along with a solid 3.15 ERA and 24 strikeouts in just 20 innings of work in his first 21 appearances of the season before being sidelined due to a shoulder injury. After recovering from the ailment, he appeared in one game before sustaining his current ankle injury from a freak accident getting into a hot/cold tub, according to Keegan Matheson.

For Burr, he was actually looking to build upon a solid 2024 campaign with the Jays in which he compiled a 4.13 ERA, 1.26 WHIP with 47 strikeouts in just 32 2/3 innings pitched over 34 appearances with the club. The 31-year-old right-hander had actually been on the injured list since the start of the 2025 season as a result of shoulder inflammation and was just recently activated in July.

Burr would appear in only two games in which he held his opponents scoreless with three strikeouts over two innings of work before being sidelined due to a rotator cuff strain. That, of course, has now become a season-ending injury that requires a surgical procedure to repair his right shoulder.

With García potentially out long-term and Burr already ruled out for the rest of the 2025 season, the Jays will have no choice but to be active this upcoming trade deadline in pursuit of bullpen help if they hope to improve heading into their playoff run.
