The 2024 season was disapointing for the Toronto Blue Jays, but one of the worst parts about it was their bullpen. The production from the relief pitchers was dreadful, which gives the Toronto front office a task to upgrade this group this offseason.
Now that the MLB Winter Meetings have begun, the Blue Jays have jumped into the conversation in the reliever market, according to MLB Network's Jon Morosi. He reports that Toronto is one of four teams active on free agent relievers.
The amount of arms available is very significant, but the Blue Jays did just miss out on reuniting with Jordan Romano. Morosi lists the top the arms available, which indicates that Toronto is searching the market for top-of-the-line relievers. It is unknown at this point if they want Chad Green to continue to be a closer or take a step back to a setup man in 2025.
Blue Jays finally active on reliever market at the MLB Winter Meetings
The names Morosi listed are very significant and would dramatically improve the Blue Jays bullpen. Toronto is in desperate need of a high leverage reliever, but a left hander would be most ideal. The only southpaw that Morosi listed is Tanner Scott and that is a perfect fit for the Blue Jays.
Scott pitched for Miami and San Diego in 2024, but is now one of the top free agent relievers. Last season, Scott posted an earned run average of 1.75 across 72 innings and struck out 84 batters. Opposing hitters batted just .175 against him and he walked batters at a 12.2% rate to generate a WHIP of 1.13. That walk percentage is a concern, as it has been for his entire career. Nonetheless, Scott is still the top left handed reliever on the market, which is where Toronto should be looking.
Carlos Estevez, Kenley Jansen, Kirby Yates, and Kyle Finnegan are all fits as well as they are solid high leverage relievers. Jeff Hoffman is getting looks as a starting pitcher, which could complicate a deal with Toronto, but these right-handers would also be great additions.
Overall, it is very reassuring to see the Blue Jays on the market, trying to upgrade a weakness to the team. Getting a guy like Scott would be perfect for this team, but turning towards other high leverage relievers that are right handed is a positive aswell. Let's see what they can get done at the MLB Winter Meetings.
