Blue Jays get plenty of All-Star Recognition, but biggest success story was snubbed

A great rookie season won't include an All-Star nod.

Considering the Toronto Blue Jays could be entering the All-Star break this weekend with a losing record, having four players selected to represent the club is a rather fortunate outcome. A lot of it has to do with the fact that Blue Jays fans are known for being one of the best voting fan bases for the Midsummer Classic. It seems like every year Toronto fans do their part and cast their votes for their guys.

This year was no different with second baseman Ernie Clement (deservingly) and first baseman Vladimir Guerrero Jr. (less deservingly) getting voted as starters. Much of that has to do with not only their performances in 2026, but also for their work during the Blue Jays' 2025 run to the AL pennant and a trip to the World Series.

Meantime, starting pitcher Dylan Cease, and reliever Louis Varland also earned trips to the 96th MLB All-Star Game, which will be played July 14 at Citizens Bank Park in Philadelphia. Guerrero has already announced he will skip the festivities to rest his ailing back ahead of what the Blue Jays hope will be a second-half playoff push.

But even with that group getting the recognition there is one player who fans are quite surprised didn't make the American League squad, and that's third baseman Kazuma Okamoto.

Okamoto has been one of, if not the biggest Blue Jays' breakout stars in 2026, yet he'll be watching from home after being left off the roster. Given Toronto's disappointing record (42-48) five All-Stars may have been a difficult sell for the selection committee. But if there was one Blue Jay who had earned the right to be included, it was arguably Okamoto.

The 11-year veteran of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball league has exceeded even the loftiest expectations in his first MLB season. Fresh off being named the American League Rookie of the Month for June, Okamoto leads the Blue Jays with 19 home runs, 54 RBIs and 2.0 fWAR while also establishing himself as a much better defensive third basemen than anyone expected him to be. He's accumulated a 1.9 defensive fWAR through his first 86 games. He's played 735 innings at third base (10 at first) and has a +5 Defensive Runs Saved.

Those numbers also explain why so many fans believed he deserved a place on the AL All-Star team. While Cease, Clement and Varland were all deserving selections, Okamoto has arguably been Toronto's biggest success story in 2026. Okamoto just missed out getting through via the fan vote, even though he racked up over 1.2 million votes. Junior Caminero of the Tampa Bay Rays edged him out.

Okamoto snub the least of the Blue Jays worries

However, in the grand scheme of things, one player missing from a glorified exhibition game won't make or break the season for the Blue Jays. That could very well come before the All-Star break. The Blue Jays head into an important six game stretch, taking on two NL West clubs in the San Francisco Giants and the San Diego Padres.

While the opponents aren't of super importance, it's building up the wins and trying to get to the All-Star break nearer to the .500 mark then they currently are. Any further drop below .500 and Toronto are starting to have some serious conversations about whether they are actually buying or not at the trade deadline. While the third Wild Card spot may still be in reach, it is much more because of how subpar everyone else has been rather than how well the Blue Jays have managed to keep up with the rest of the pack.
