After completing a six-game homestand to begin the 2026 MLB season, the Toronto Blue Jays are set to embark on their first road trip of the year as they head to Chicago to play the White Sox for the upcoming weekend series.
The Blue Jays have been off to a solid start after going 4-2 against the Athletics and Colorado Rockies to sit in second place in the American League East behind the New York Yankees. The White Sox, on the other hand, have come slow out of the gate, losing five of their first six games to sit at the bottom of the AL Central.
White Sox home opener against the Blue Jays on Thursday postponed until Friday
The first road game of the season for the Blue Jays and home opener for the White Sox has been put on hold for another day. That is because inclement weather in the forecast has made MLB postpone the Blue Jays game against the White Sox on Friday for a scheduled 2:10 pm EST start.
The Blue Jays were ready to send Dylan Cease to the mound to face his former team in which he broke into the MLB with. Cease is coming off a strong start against the Athletics in which he established a new franchise record for strikeouts for a pitcher making his debut with Toronto with 12.
The 30-year-old right-hander had previously spent five seasons with the White Sox, compiling a 43-35 record, 3.83 ERA, 1.31 WHIP, along with 792 strikeouts in just 658 innings pitched with the organization. His best season in the majors also came with Chicago back in 2022 when he posted a 14-8 record, 2.20 ERA, 1.11 WHIP, together with 227 strikeouts in just 184 total innings over 32 starts to finish second in AL Cy Young voting that year.
Surprisingly, Cease has only faced his former team once since leaving the organization in a trade with the San Diego Padres during the 2023-24 offseason. In his lone start against the White Sox, he gave up four earned runs on four hits with three walks and six strikeouts over six innings of work, taking the loss in the process. As a result, Cease will be looking for a better result with Toronto in his second career start against Chicago now set to take place on Friday.
In addition, the matchup will feature the two top Japanese free agents from this past offseason going against each other in the Blue Jays’ Kazuma Okamoto and the White Sox’s Munetaka Murakami. Both players have been off to strong starts with their respective clubs, with Okamoto amassing a .292 average, .912 OPS, along with four runs scored, two home runs and three RBIs in six games with Toronto and Murakami posting a solid .238 average, 1.027 OPS, together with five runs scored, three home runs and four RBIs in six games with Chicago.
The Blue Jays will look to continue their winning ways while the White Sox will look to turn things around as the two teams will begin their clash on Good Friday in what should be an exciting holiday weekend of baseball.
