Alex Bregman is now a Chicago Cub. Something not many people saw coming at the onset of the offseason, but they blew down the doors in negotiating with the All-Star third baseman.

That's something that can't be said for Bregman's former team, the Boston Red Sox, who put up a rather pathetic offer comparably to what the Cubbies offered. Now with those figures public, Toronto fans likely shouldn't be worried about the Red Sox being serious about adding any other free agent superstar players, including one of the Blue Jays' own.

According to MLB reporter Jon Heyman, the Red Sox offer to Bregman was about $15 million under the Cubs deal.

If that's the kind of offer they are willing to make for a player that was already in their clubhouse, and a "good clubhouse guy" according to reports, than what are they going to do to try and bring in players from other organizations? It might not come as a major surprise then to see that the biggest moves the Red Sox have made this winter have been trades.

But now that they have a major hole in their lineup, conventional wisdom would lean toward them going after the next big name on the market, which would be Bo Bichette. Could their be a bidding war now between the Blue Jays and the Red Sox for Bichette's services? Sure, anything is possible, but after seeing what the Red Sox have offered Bregman, it is very unlikely that they entice Bichette with that number. It's also unlikely they go over that amount for Bo.

Bichette does feel like the perfect replacement for Bregman in Boston, even if he doesn't technically play the same position. Bichette has told teams he is willing to move off of shortstop. That gives Boston some opportunity to move some of their incumbents around the infield. Marcelo Mayer, Ceddanne Rafaela, Kristian Campbell, and Romy Gonzalez all feel like they could be interchangeable around the diamond.

Adding Bichette to that mix might create a logjam, but the Red Sox also saw guys come up and down from Triple-A to the big leagues in varying stints in 2025, and so there is no guarantee they will all have sustained success in 2026. However, it does feel like the Red Sox are settling on going with their internal options at the moment and seeing how it plays out. Regardless, it will be big shoes to fill both from an offensive and defensive standpoint. Bregman slashed .283/.360/.462 with 18 home runs in 114 games. He was provided elite level defense and was worth 3.5bWAR.

While the Blue Jays can't ever feel 100% comfortable about not seeing Bo in a Red Sox jersey, the rumors are running rampant that he could be heading to Philadelphia. It's a small silver lining to losing a player that should be one of the faces of the franchise, but almost every Blue Jays' fan will admit that if he isn't coming back to Toronto, as long as he is out of the AL East, they'll be fine with where he signs.
