The Toronto Blue Jays might have had one of the worst offenses in all of baseball in 2026. But according to the voters, they also happened to have one of the best defenses in the league. Toronto has been recognized as the top defending team in the American League as they captured the 2026 AL Team Gold Glove Award.

The Blue Jays finished first in the AL in Fielding Run Value (FRV) with a plus-46 rating, and third in Defensive Runs Saved (DRS) with a plus-51 mark. They were also fifth in Outs Above Average (OAA) at plus-14. The Blue Jays also made many spectacular defensive plays in the field to help the team secure some important wins despite a disappointing campaign.

The Blue Jays had one thing working for them in 2026, and that was team defense

Even though the Blue Jays took home the team Gold Glove honours, none of their players were recognized as individual winners.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr., Nathan Lukes, Andrés Giménez, Brandon Valenzuela and José Soriano were all finalists for their respective positions for the Gold Glove Award. They all ended up empty-handed. They did an amazing job collectively to minimize runs against, but weren't good enough as individuals to recieve those merits.

But among the Blue Jays finalists, Giménez led the team in OAA with plus-19 and FRV with plus-16. Lukes led the Blue Jays in DRS with plus-13. Guerrero probably had the best chance among the group of five Blue Jays to win a Gold Glove as he was in a close contest with Houston Astros’ first baseman Christian Walker with respective to the defensive numbers. However, Walker prevailed when the results finally came in.

With the team Gold Glove win, it marked the third time in four years that Toronto has received the this award. They brought home this same trophy in in 2023, 2024 and now in 2026.

One thing coming out of all of this is the fact that their defense has been, and continues to be an area that the Blue Jays seem to get right year in and year out. The focus this offseason will be on the other aspects of their game.

If they can get more consistent pitching and a revitalized offense for 2027, Toronto should be in good shape to contend once again.
