Blue Jays already moving up prospect acquired in Twins-Tommy Nance trade

It was over a week ago when the Toronto Blue Jays dealt away one of their bullpen pieces in Tommy Nance to the Minnesota Twins ahead of the trade deadline. In the deal, the Blue Jays received a promising catching prospect in the name of Ryan Sprock to add much-needed depth at the catcher’s position for Toronto.

Sprock has made such a good impression, even before he played a game within the system, that he was assigned to the Blue Jays’ High-A affiliate Vancouver Canadians to begin his tenure with the organization. The 21-year-old prospect had previously played in Single-A with the Twins organization this season.

In 65 games with Fort Myers, Sprock compiled a .306 average, .877 OPS, along with 46 runs scored, 13 doubles, five home runs and 37 RBIs. More impressively, he has also showed some speed, tallying 14 stolen bases all while showing tremendous plate discipline with more walks than strikeouts.

The Blue Jays could have another catching gem with Sprock

With a fresh start in Vancouver following the trade, Sprock has already recorded his first hit and run, while continuing his solid approach at the plate with three walks and three strikeouts. For his entire minor league career to date, the 21-year-old catcher has posted a .284 average, .831 OPS, with 60 runs scored, 14 doubles, two triples, seven home runs, 49 RBIs and 16 stolen bases in 92 total games played.

With the Blue Jays having just Edward Duran as their only catching prospect to land in their top 30 prospects list, it makes the addition and rise of Sprock that much more important down the road for Toronto. That is because after major league incumbents Alejandro Kirk and Brandon Valenzuela, the cupboard is actually a bit bare for the Blue Jays in terms of the next prospect up from the catching position.

As for what the Jays gave up for Sprock, Nance has put up similar numbers to what he did in Toronto so far with the Twins. In two appearances with Minnesota, the 35-year-old veteran has amassed a win, a 3.86 ERA, along with three strikeouts in 2.1 innings pitched.

Previously with Toronto this season, Nance had compiled a 3.82 ERA, with 34 strikeouts in 33 total innings over 32 relief appearances. The Blue Jays may feel a little pain temporarily with the hit to their relief corps. But it could become a long-term gain if Sprock continues to perform and ascend the Jays system.
