Blue Jays’ 2027 outfield picture could lead them straight to Randy Arozarena

The Toronto Blue Jays traded away several players before the end of the 2026 MLB Trade Deadline. Among the most notable players was outfielder Daulton Varsho, as they dealt him to the Houston Astros in exchange for pitcher Spencer Arrighetti.

The Blue Jays' decision to move on from Varsho was understandable. This is because the 30-year-old outfielder is a pending unrestricted free agent and the Blue Jays were on the wrong side of the playoff line. Thus, it makes sense that Toronto traded him instead of potentially losing him for nothing in free agency this offseason. At the same time the Blue Jays could also be losing George Springer. Springer wasn't traded, but he is also a free agent at the end of the season. While he hasn't played a ton of outfield this season, that is the only other position Springer does play when he is not the DH.

With the Blue Jays trading Varsho and the potential of losing Springer, there will be some holes to fill for an outfielder-type role this offeseason. Because of this, they are already being connected to one of the best pending UFA outfielders.

In a recent article for FanSided, Christopher Kline predicted that the Blue Jays will be the team that sign's Seattle Mariners star outfielder Randy Arozarena in free agency this offseason. "With Daulton Varsho out and George Springer nearing retirement (or his own free agency exit), there's ample incentive to fork over big money to Randy Arozarena, one of the rare bright spots in a frustrating Mariners season," Kline wrote.

With the Blue Jays in a position of needing to improve their outfield this offseason, it is understandable that they are being viewed as a prime potential landing spot for Arozarena. If they signed him, he would undoubtedly give their roster a nice boost for next season.

In 112 games so far this season with the Mariners, Arozarena has recorded 15 home runs, 20 stolen bases, 50 RBI, and a .276 batting average. This comes after the three-time All-Star hit a career-high 27 home runs and stole 31 bases in 160 games with Seattle in 2025. With numbers like these, he would provide the Blue Jays' lineup with not only more pop but also some speed as the 31-year-old hasn't shown any real signs of slowing down.

While Arozarena stands out as a potential free agency fit for the Blue Jays, there are other intriguing outfielders who can hit the market this offseason. Among this year's pending UFA outfielders include Ian Happ, Seiya Suzuki, Taylor Ward, and Trent Grisham.

Arozarena should not be the only player whom the Blue Jays consider pursuing this offseason to improve their outfield. Yet, out of this bunch of players, he would arguably have the potential to make the biggest impact for Toronto.

Blue Jays could also be satisfied with internal replacements for 2027

At the deadline, the Blue Jays also acquired a 24-year-old prospect who has seemingly fit in quite well with Toronto. Brett Bateman was acquired in the Kevin Gausman trade with the Chicago Cubs. Going into Thursday's game (Aug. 13), Bateman has seven hits in six games, (.259 batting average) with three RBIs, two walks and two doubles. He's also played above average defense in center field.

The left-handed hitter certainly has a chance to stick around with the Blue Jays for a while if he continues this production. Meantime, the Blue Jays also have Anthony Santander and Addison Barger rehabbing from their respective injuries and they will look to factor back into the lineup somehow. The Blue Jays could decide they are satifsfied with their outfield compliment going into 2027 and therefore, comepletely ignore the outfield market. But that wouldn't be the best business practice and if they can get a guy like Arozarena, it is a move that certainly raises their competitive floor.
