The Toronto Blue Jays had a bit of an underwhelming deadline, acquiring Seranthony Dominguez, Shane Bieber, Ty France, and Louie Varland. While those are solid pickups, General Manager Ross Atkins needed to do much more with this market and one of the big names that he missed out on was David Bednar. The Pirates stunningly settled with the Yankees for a rather cheaper than expected return, landing three prospects.
The headliner of that deal was Rafael Flores, the Yankees 8th best prospect per MLB Pipeline. He appears to help Pittsburgh as their catching room is really weak, yet he was not the top five organizational prospect the team was reportedly after. Additionally, Pittsburgh got Edgleen Perez their No. 13 prospect per MLB Pipeline and Brian Sanchez an unranked prospect.
That package seems somewhat short for what was expected to go for Bednar. The bigger issue with this is that it was extremely affordable for the Blue Jays. Toronto obviously has a weaker farm system, yet they had what it took to do that trade.
This is what the Blue Jays' package for David Bednar could have looked like.
For Flores, the Blue Jays could have easily offered Yohendrick Pinango. Now rated the sixth best prospect in the organization per MLB Pipeline, the outfielder is major league ready and has done well this season, posting a .816 OPS with 14 home runs.
Additionally, for Perez, Toronto could have given up Edward Duran, a catching prospect around the same level as Perez and the 15th ranked prospect according to MLB Pipeline. Duran is arguably better, posting a .769 OPS with an above average glove behind the plate.
Lastly for Sanchez, an unranked prospect. Toronto could have unloaded Sam Shaw, their 23rd ranked prospect as well, making this a better overall trade for Bednar. Shaw has a .750 OPS with seven home runs this year.
Pirates' fans probably would not like this return either, yet if this is what that front office was after, Toronto definitely could have gotten something like this done. The Blue Jays got very fortunate with Louie Varland as a reliever, saving this trade deadline.
