AL playoff standings update after Blue Jays take key series from Guardians

The Toronto Blue Jays tightened the American League Wild Card race by taking care of business in their most important series of the 2026 season so far. 

After getting shut down by Gavin Williams on Tuesday night, the Blue Jays responded by winning the next two games against the Cleveland Guardians to trim their deficit in the standings to just half a game. They also clinched the season series 4-2. 

Thursday’s 6-3 victory was a total team effort. Nathan Lukes plated two on a double in a four-run fifth inning, and the bullpen was sharp in relief of José Soriano. Spencer Miles picked up the win while Louis Varland locked down his 32nd save. There’s still a lot of baseball left to be played, but the Blue Jays rose to the occasion in what felt like a must-win series. 

Where do things stand now for the AL Wild Card hopefuls? 

The field of AL playoff hopefuls has finally started to narrow, with the Guardians, Blue Jays, Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers all within two games of each other. The Minnesota Twins, Detroit Tigers, and Seattle Mariners have all slipped further back.

Next up for the Blue Jays is another series against the red-hot Kansas City Royals, who just embarrassed them at the Rogers Centre last week. This three-game clash will take place in the spacious confines of Kauffman Stadium. 

After that, the Blue Jays will head to Sacramento to play the Athletics before returning home to host the Orioles for a series that could have massive playoff implications. Those two teams will match up for three more games beginning on September 21st.

The Guardians, meanwhile, will play the Tigers over the weekend, then head to Baltimore for a three-game series of their own. The Blue Jays will have a massive opportunity to gain ground during that time if they can handle the pesky Athletics. 

The Rangers will also have their hands full with the Tampa Bay Rays, Mariners, and playoff-hopeful Arizona Diamondbacks next up on their schedule. 

Games aren’t played on paper, but the Blue Jays’ schedule is lining up nicely if they can string a few wins together. The roughly 84 wins they’ll need to make the playoffs are still within reach, even after that unfortunate hiccup against the Royals. 

The lineup will need to keep producing like it has in five of the last six games. George Springer, Alejandro Kirk, and Brett Bateman will need to continue leading the way—and perhaps Vladimir Guerrero Jr. will hit a few more balls over the fence like he did on Wednesday night.

The pitching, meanwhile, just needs to keep delivering as it has for much of the season. The expanded rosters are certainly a blessing for this group considering how many injuries they have endured in 2026. Veterans like Joe Mantiply and Paul Sewald, as well as youngster Ricky Tiedemann, will need to pull their weight behind the big boys at the back end of the bullpen.

One thing is for sure: September is shaping up to be an exciting month of baseball.
