2020: Blue Jays lose AL Wild Card series to Tampa Bay Rays (2-0)
During the Covid-shortened season, the Blue Jays (32-28) qualified for an expanded postseason that included eight teams from each league. While they bowed out in two games to the Rays (3-1, 8-2) it was a sign of things to come as it was the first taste of playoff baseball during the Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Bo Bichette era.
2022: Blue Jays lose AL Wild Card series to Seattle Mariners (2-0)
The Blue Jays finished in a tie for the third best record in the American League (92-70) and had a ton of momentum heading into the postseason. But in a series they got to host at Rogers Centre, the bats were stifled by Luis Castillo in Game One losing 4-0. Game Two turned into a horror show as it became one of the worst collapses in a do-or-die game in playoff history as Toronto squandered an 8-1 lead, and were still up 9-5 going into the top of the eighth before the Mariners stormed back and won 10-9 to end Toronto’s season.
2023: Blue Jays lose AL Wild Card series to Minnesota Twins (2-0)
The Blue Jays regressed in 2023 and basically stumbled their way into the playoffs finishing third in the division with an 89-73 record and grabbing the last playoff spot available. A lot of fans felt they barely deserved to be a playoff team that year, but they had a chance to prove everyone wrong if they could string together some success in October.
Not only did that success not materialize but the Blue Jays were embarrassed by the Twins, a team that had a worse record than them at 87-75. The Twins scored five runs over the two games and still swept the Jays. In Game One it was a 3-1 victory and in Game Two it was a 2-0 shutout. What stands out about this series is the baffling decision to remove Blue Jays pitcher José Berrios in the bottom of the fourth while he was having a strong game. There’s also the pickoff of Guerrero Jr. at second base to end the top of the fifth with runners on second and third and Bo Bichette at the plate.
The Blue Jays now in 2025 will be looking for their first playoff win since Game Four of the 2016 ALCS.
