A perfect ERA wasn’t enough to save Simeon Woods Richardson’s spot in Blue Jays bullpen

Simeon Woods Richardson's second stint with the Toronto Blue Jays has come to an end. The 25-year-old right-hander was designated for assignment on Friday (Jun. 26) ahead of the Blue Jays' game at home against the Texas Rangers. This comes in spite of Woods Richardson carrying an ERA of 0.00 through his ten innings with the Blue Jays.

Woods Richardson was once the Blue Jays' No. 3 ranked prospect in their system, but was sent to the Minnesota Twins in a deal that landed José Berrios in Toronto in 2021. He made his MLB debut a year later with the AL Central club. After posting two seasons where he posted fWARs of 1.8 and 1.2 in 2024 and 2025 respectively, Woods Richardson was a mess in his first 12 games of 2026, resulting in the Twins DFA'ing the 6-foot-3 righty, paving his way to rejoining the Blue Jays.

Woods Richardson couldn't get the walks under control in Toronto. Despite the fact he didn't allow a runner to cross the plate, he pitched to a 6.30 ERA and sported a 4.20 FIP - numbers that are just waiting for a disaster to happen.

Taking his spot on the roster is the surprising rookie, Adam Macko, whom many felt shouldn't have been sent down in the first place after he posted good numbers duing his first foray into the big leagues.

Macko gets second chance at solidifying his spot in the Blue Jays' bullpen

Macko made his MLB debut on May 18 in Yankee Stadium and held the New York Yankees scoreless, pitching a full inning in the middle of a tight game that ended up a 7-6 Yankees win after Yariel Rodriguez allowed four earned runs in the bottom of the seventh.

From that point forward, the Canadian Macko continued to prove himself in every outing, pitching to a 1.50 ERA, a 2.94 FIP and getting 12 strikeouts in 12 innings pitched. He gave up two earned runs on 11 hits, while walking only two batters. He was also credited with two wins and three holds before he was surprisingly demoted on Jun. 11.

The lefty Macko also gives the Blue Jays an extra southpaw in the bullpen after Mason Fluharty was manager John Schneiders only option out of the pen to combat a left-on-left matchup. The 25-year-old Macko is expected to be available out of the Blue Jays' bullpen for their game against the Texas Rangers on Friday night (Jun. 26).

It's been an active day on the transactions wire for the Blue Jays. They announced earlier in the day that they were calling up Sean Keys, but he wasn't expected to be activated for Friday's game. Keys has been arguably the Blue Jays' best hitting prospect in the minors this year, with 21 home runs across Double-A and Triple-A.
